Inleiding
Een in 1920-1921 tot stand gekomen BADHUIS naar een ontwerp in de stijl van de Amsterdamse School van de architect A.J. Westerman van de Dienst Publieke Werken. Het voormalig badhuis is geheel vrijstaand gelegen op het Boerhaaveplein en had destijds aan weerszijden van het kantoor de gescheiden ingangen voor mannen en vrouwen. Rondom de centraal gelegen en eveneens gescheiden wachtkamers liep een gang waaraan de verschillende bad- en douchecellen.
Omschrijving
Op een cirkelvormig grondplan tot stand gekomen badhuis met één functionele bouwlaag boven het maaiveld. In het midden een in twee trappen hoger opgetrokken deel met houten beschot en met rondom aaneengesloten eenvoudige vensters ter verlichting van gang en wachtkamers. Het centrale en hoger opgetrokken koepeldak bestaat uit acht geknikte schilden gedekt met shingles. Op vier schilden een segmentvormige dakkapel met venster. In het midden een gedrongen schoorsteen. De gemetselde en rondlopende gevel van de begane grond is opgebouwd uit bruinrood geschakeerde baksteen in staand verband. De omlopende plint met accenten in de rollaag bestaat uit donkere baksteen. De plint wordt onderbroken door de ontluchtingsroosters van de toenmalige verwarmingskelder. Aan de noordzijde bevindt zich een rechthoekige uitbouw met trasraam in eveneens donkere baksteen en met lage bak voor beplanting waarboven horizontaal en vertikaal geleed drievoudig venster van het kantoor. Hierboven nog 'GEMEENTEBADHUIS' in metalen letters en met flankerende ornamenten. Links en rechts hiervan een korte stoep met drie treden naar eenvoudig portiek met toegang tot de gescheiden badafdelingen. Sierlijst boven de toegangen. Aan de linkerzijde is deze aanleg intact en heeft nog het opschrift 'ingang mannen'. De rechte gevelbeëindiging heeft een afwateringslijst en houten boeideel met klossen. Aan de achterzijde verder nog twee eenvoudige toegangen en in het muurwerk rechthoekige en vierkante vensteropeningen.
Waardering
Voormalig badhuis van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde. Van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling. Eveneens van belang vanuit het oogpunt van de volkshuisvesting in samenhang met volksgezondheid, waarbij opvattingen over goed wonen nauw verweven waren met die over hygiëne. Het badhuis is gelegen bij woonblokken die in opdracht van woningbouwverenigingen tot stand gekomen zijn. De stedebouwkundige ligging vormt een toegevoegde waarde. Aan het Smaragdplein staat een vrijwel identiek badhuis.

Description
A bathhouse constructed on a circular ground plan with one functional storey above ground level. In the middle a section rising two storeys higher with wooden boarding and with continuously arranged simple windows all around for lighting the corridor and waiting rooms. The central and higher-rising dome roof consists of eight bent hipped roofs covered with shingles. On four of the roofs a segmental roof dormer with window. In the middle a squat chimney. The rendered and continuous facade of the ground floor is constructed of reddish-brown graduated brickwork in vertical bond. The continuous plinth with accents in the roll course consists of dark brickwork. The plinth is interrupted by the ventilation grilles of the former heating cellar. On the north side there is a rectangular extension with slag window likewise in dark brickwork and with low box for planting above which a horizontally and vertically divided triple window of the office. Above this 'GEMEENTEBADHUIS' in metal letters and with flanking ornaments. To the left and right of this a short stoop with three steps to a simple porch with access to the separate bathing departments. Ornamental band above the entrances. On the left side this arrangement is intact and still has the inscription 'entrance men'. The straight gable termination has a drip moulding and wooden brace course with blocks. On the rear side furthermore two simple entrances and in the brickwork rectangular and square window openings.
Valuation
Former bathhouse of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value. Of significance as a distinctive expression of a typological development.
