Inleiding
Fort Henricus is aangelegd tussen 1622 en 1628 aan de monding van de Steenbergse Vliet ten tijde van het Spaans bewind. Het fort maakte deel uit van de zgn. Steenbergse Linie. Aanvankelijk was het een eenvoudig aardwerk, later werd het omgevormd tot vijfhoek met bastions, gracht, enveloppe, buitengracht en voorwal. Op het fort bevonden zich diverse gebouwen en aan de overzijde van de haven lag een hoornwerk. Van de oorspronkelijke bebouwing op het fort resteert thans niets meer. De fortgracht is gedempt maar het tracé is nog geheel zichtbaar. De hoofdvorm van het fort is nog duidelijk herkenbaar in het landschap. Het fort wordt deels omringd door de Schansdijk en de Oude Vlietpolderdijk.
Naast de zichtbare cultuurhistorische waarden, herbergen de resten van het fort ook niet- zichtbare waarden. Het gaat dan om de archeologische informatiewaarde van het complex. Aangezien er vooralsnog geen archeologisch onderzoek is uitgevoerd gaat het om verwachtingen. Allereerst betreffen dit de sporen van de indeling en het gebruik van het fort, zoals gebouwen, kuilen, militaire resten en dergelijke. In samenhang daarmee is de inhoud van de - grotendeels - dichtgeraakte grachten van belang. Veelal werd afval uit het fort in de grachten gegooid. Door de goede - natte - conserveringomstandigheden is ook het vermoedelijk aanwezige ecologisch materiaal goed bewaard gebleven. Naast aardewerken en metalen voorwerpen zijn ook voorwerpen van meer vergankelijk materiaal, zoals leren en houten voorwerpen te verwachten, maar ook aanwijzingen omtrent voedselpatronen van de gebruikers van het fort.
Omschrijving
FORT HENRICUS, bestaande uit een regelmatig gevormd aardwerk met vijf bastions, gelegen aan de Steenbergse Haven ten noorden van Steenbergen. Rondom het fort bevindt zich het tracé van de (gedempte) fortgracht.
Waardering
FORT HENRICUS is van belang:
- vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als militair-historisch object;
- vanwege de hoge archeologische waarde;
- vanwege de ensemblewaarde met overige (deels beschermde) forten en onderdelen behorend bij de Steenbergse Linie;
- vanwege de herkenbaarheid in het landschap.

Introduction
Fort Henricus was constructed between 1622 and 1628 at the mouth of the Steenbergse Vliet during Spanish rule. The fort was part of the so-called Steenbergse Linie. Initially it was a simple earthwork, later it was transformed into a pentagon with bastions, moat, envelope, outer moat and rampart. Various buildings stood on the fort and on the opposite side of the harbour lay a hornwork. Nothing remains of the original buildings on the fort. The fort moat has been filled in but the trace is still entirely visible. The main shape of the fort is still clearly recognisable in the landscape. The fort is partly surrounded by the Schansdijk and the Oude Vlietpolderdijk.
Besides the visible cultural-historical values, the remains of the fort also harbour non-visible values. This concerns the archaeological information value of the complex. Since no archaeological investigation has been carried out so far, these are expectations. First of all, these concern traces of the layout and use of the fort, such as buildings, pits, military remains and the like. In connection with this, the contents of the largely filled ditches are significant. Often rubbish from the fort was thrown into the ditches. Due to the good - wet - preservation conditions, the presumed ecological material has also been well preserved. Besides pottery and metal objects, objects of more perishable material, such as leather and wooden objects are to be expected, as well as indications regarding food patterns of the fort's users.

FORT HENRICUS, consisting of a regularly formed earthwork with five bastions, situated at the Steenbergse Haven north of Steenbergen. Around the fort is the trace of the (filled) fort moat.

FORT HENRICUS is of importance:
