The register's description

Omschrijving

Waardering

Het HOOFDGEBOUW (Rhijnauwen) is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de architectonische vormgeving;

- vanwege de bouw- en ontwikkelingsgeschiedenis;

- vanwege het behoud van een deel van de oorspronkelijke plattegrond en indeling en vanwege de bewaard gebleven oorspronkelijke interieurafwerkingen;

- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de parkaanleg;

Description

The house Rhijnauwen came into its present form in the first half of the 18th century on the instructions of the then owner Melchior ten Hove. The southeastern wing of the old castle was incorporated into the new block-shaped building. This part is now still recognizable by the different masonry. The undercellared house of red brick on rectangular groundplan consists of two storeys and an attic storey under a flattened hipped roof clad with Dutch tiles and fitted with chimneys at the ridge ends. The symmetrical front facade has five window bays fitted with sash windows in empire style and shutters. At the level of the basement several multi-pane cellar windows. On the roof a double gable with multi-pane windows and ornamental braces. The front door is located in the middle bay and is framed with an ornamental fanlight set in a pilaster arrangement. The window above is also simply framed. Preceding the entrance a hard stone flight of steps with iron balustrade on both sides.

On the rear side the facade projects slightly at the level of the two most southeastern window bays. This southeastern corner is a remnant of the late medieval house Rhijnauwen. This part was spared during the rebuilding in the first half of the 18th century and incorporated into the new house. The older masonry is recognizable by the different brickwork. Rear and side facades are fitted with windows as on the front side, but without shutters. On the roof simple gables with multi-pane windows.

The original groundplan and layout have been partly preserved. In order to make the building suitable as a youth hostel, interior alterations took place after 1950 in various phases. In doing so the original groundplan and layout were changed for the installation of, among other things, kitchens, sanitary facilities and bedrooms. Some rooms were still provided with their 18th-century panelling until after the Second World War. In one of the rooms painted wallpaper with landscape scenes was incorporated into the panelling. These original interior finishes have largely disappeared over time (20th century). The representative staircase in Louis XV style has been preserved, as well as the 18th-century doors and 19th-century windows. In the older, southeastern part of the house there remains a ceiling with foliage painting from circa 1600, which has recently been brought back into view.

Valuation

The MAIN BUILDING (Rhijnauwen) is of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of the architectural design;

- because of the construction and development history;

- because of the preservation of part of the original groundplan and layout and because of the preserved original interior finishes;

- because of the characteristic location within the park layout;

- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
