Inleiding

Architect is W. Hamer.

Introduction

Three adjoining former WAREHOUSES, named "Medan", "Bindjeij", "Laboean", on the west side of the Houtmankade, built in 1895, commissioned by P.W. Janssen, the director of the Delimaatschappij. The architect is W. Hamer. The warehouses are executed in a Neo-Renaissance style with elements such as stepped gables (with triangular and semi-circular pediments), consoles and yellow mortared ornamental bands. In type this storage building is in line with the warehouses from the Golden Age. The three warehouses lie with their left side gable free on the Nova Zemblastraat. The warehouses were extended in 1898-1900 with Nova Zemblastraat 4-6.

N.B. In the warehouses, which have been altered in parts, small businesses are now housed.

Description

The building has four storeys and an attic storey at the height of almost a complete storey and is constructed in brick English bond on a (bevelled) rectangular ground plan under three gabled roofs with stepped gables. The facades are articulated by yellow facing brick bands (three courses) at the height of the hardstone drip moulds of the windows. The rear facade has six window bays, the front facade nine. The small windows in the front and rear facades are closed off by a brick arch and are provided with a closing stone of yellow facing bricks and have hardstone drip moulds. The front facade has hardstone closing and setting stones on the ground floor. The hoist shutter openings, in the central axis of the three adjoining apex gables, on the first to third storeys are square-headed and have hardstone facade elements above and below, with the Indonesian warehouse names above the first storey. On either side of the hoist shutters there is a small window. The uppermost, arched opening is located under a hoist beam and has a round window on either side. The left side facade contains windows under a roller course. At the level of floor slabs and roof girdings there are bar anchors in all facades. The left and right front facades are identical. The stepped gables have natural stone saddle backs and coping. The top pilaster is supported by a worked, broad console. The central axis with the hoist shutter openings, with hardstone blocks at the level of the thumbs, projecting. The middle building, with only one stair on consoles, has a semi-circular pediment with ball ornament as crowning. In the plinth, enclosed by a cemented band, there is entirely on the left a facade stone: 'THE FIRST STONE LAID / BY / THE GENTLEMAN P.W. JANSSEN / DIRECTOR OF THE DELI COMPANY / 14 SEPT. 1895'.

The left side facade has nine bays; the right one is almost entirely blind except for the ground floor window. In the second and penultimate window bay there are hoist shutter openings, of which the uppermost, as a flat-covered capping in the roof surface, breaks through the roof line. The bays are placed between lisenes covered with set-offs, which rest on the mortared bevelled sill. The lisenes interrupt the continuous yellow facing brick ornamental band. The rear facade has on each storey two arched windows and a continuous ornamental band. On the attic storey there is a single window. The internal load-bearing structure consists of tapering cast iron columns on which the wooden floors rest.

Appreciation

The three adjoining warehouses "Medan", "Bindjeij" and "Laboean" from 1895 are of general importance due to cultural and architectural historical values as a characteristic example of a traditionally constructed storage building with contemporary detailing; also of importance due to situational and ensemble value due to the still recognisable relationship with the neighbouring warehouses and the Houthaven.
