Omschrijving complexonderdeel 4
Waardering complexonderdeel 4

Description
Description of complex component 4
The striking VILLA 'Hoog Sandveld' located on the corner of Koninginnenlaan / Jaagpad, to the northeast of the lock, was built in 1904 as a dwelling for the head lockkeeper. The conservatory at the rear was originally an open veranda. This was closed in around 1910. The balcony at the front was originally executed with cast-iron railings with Art Nouveau detailing and brackets. The building consists of two storeys beneath a composite roof, covered with blue barrel tiles. On the right side is a single-storey building section beneath a half-hipped roof covered with blue barrel tiles. The facades are built of brick in cross-bond and flush struck. The mortared plinth, drip mouldings and horizontal bands as well as the arched stretches are executed in green glazed brick. The arch spandrels have a green / white tile mosaic. The rainwater gutters beneath the windows are of natural stone. All windows with the exception of those in the rear facade are fitted with louvre shutters from 1939. The front facade of the main volume, on the Koninginnenlaan, has on the left a slightly projecting facade section, which ends in a spout gable with shoulders. On the ground floor is a coupled sash window. On the first floor a balcony has been placed with balcony doors fitted with side and fanlights and on the attic storey a small sash window. To the right in the front facade is the entrance with a panelled door fitted with wrought-iron door grilles and with a natural stone stoop and a concrete canopy from 1939. Above the canopy is a fanlight with leaded glass. On the first floor a sash window with louvre shutters has been placed. The extension contains in the front facade one and on the right side facade two sash windows with louvre shutters. The right side facade furthermore has above the single-storey high extension only a six-sided window fitted with leaded glass. To the left of this is a mortared chimney. The left side facade has on the ground floor two and on the first floor one sash window. At the rear on the ground floor to the right the wooden conservatory is built beneath a lean-to roof covered with zinc. To the left of this is an entrance, fitted with a panelled door with a wrought-iron door grille and a fanlight and furthermore a small rectangular window with anti-theft bars of the toilet; to the left of this the window of the staff toilet. On the first floor two sash windows have been placed. Entirely to the left in the extension is a panelled door and two small rectangular window panes of the scullery. The house still has the original layout and detailing with rooms-en-suite to the left of the hall with the adjoining conservatory and to the right in the low section a small parlour and living kitchen. The rooms-en-suite have plaster ceilings with decorative rosettes and corner pieces. The sash doors are fitted with striking fittings, on which crossed keys, a climbing lion and the letters DRGM are depicted. In the hall and cellar are coloured floor tiles. On the attic is a timber-built servants' room. In front of the house stands a wrought-iron railing fence.
Valuation of complex component 4
Of general importance on account of its architectural-historical value as an example of a villa built as a lockkeeper's dwelling, as well as on account of the integrity of the main form, layout and detailing of both the exterior and the interior. Furthermore the villa is of significant ensemble value in connection with the nearby Koninginnensluis and other service dwellings. Finally, the villa is valuable on account of the striking situation on a slight elevation near the Lage Brug at the entrance of the old village of Vreeswijk.
