Inleiding

Description
Introduction
When in 1937 it had been decided to extend the Peel-Raamstelling also north of the difficult to traverse and easily defended access Peel area between Deurne and Weert, it was decided, entirely in the spirit of the time, that the defence against armoured vehicles and tanks was first and foremost important. For this purpose the construction of an anti-tank ditch was necessary, of which the line was surveyed in 1937. This ANTI-TANK DITCH, at the time known as the Defence Canal, now Peel Canal, was constructed by the Nederlandsche Heidemij and the Grontmij in 1939. Since the ditch also aimed to improve water management in the agricultural region, it was possible to excavate the canal within the framework of public works using many unemployed. The line of the ditch was partly determined by the already existing reclamations, the water management requirements and moreover obtaining the most favourable field of fire possible was an element that had to be taken into account.
The Defence or Peel Canal arrives at the access of Griendtsveen on Horster territory, but splits immediately into three (older, 19th-century) peat extraction canals: the Helenavaart, the Deurne Canal and the Griendtsveen Canal. The connection between the Defence or Peel Canal north of the access and the 'canal fork' south of the access was only established after 1940. South of the access there is also still a section of Defence Canal which runs at right angles to the Griendtsveen Canal and runs more or less parallel to the Helenavaart. However, no casemates were positioned on this southern section of anti-tank ditch. The ditch has a length of just under three kilometres on Horster territory.
Description
The ditch continues on Seveum territory, where between the municipal boundary in the north and the Kerkuilenweg in the south there is still almost two kilometres of ditch. The canal originally has a width of ten metres and a depth of 1.8 metres.
Valuation
The anti-tank ditch, called Defence Canal or Peel Canal, is of general importance and has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and as such is an important document of military history. It is of architectural- and building-historical significance because of the distinctive use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in adapting water management for military purposes. It is also important for the typological development of various defensive objects and structures concerning national land defence.
The anti-tank ditch has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of the land defence (the entirety of fortifications on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel area which as a military landscape is of cultural-historical significance. The anti-tank ditch has a distinctive historical-spatial relationship with the roads, watercourses and soil composition of the area. This interweaving also gives the complex great experiential value. Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the integrity of the Defence Canal. The anti-tank ditch is still virtually complete and undamaged and moreover as a large-scale military complex and memorial to a large-scale defence measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg it is rare.
