Omschrijving onderdeel 1

HOOFDGEBOUW (Het Berghuisje).

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de markante ligging boven de alpenweide met uitzicht tot de Amerongse Berg;

- vanwege de architectonische vormgeving in een combinatie van chalet- en neogotische stijl;

- als voorbeeld uit het oeuvre van de architect J.D. Zocher jr. en J.W. Hanrath;

Description of component 1

MAIN BUILDING (Het Berghuisje). On the high side of the alpine meadow stands an originally single-storey and single-aisle hunting lodge built between 1837-1840 in a mixture of chalet and neo-Gothic style by (landscape) architect J.D. Zocher jr. Shortly before 1920 the lodge was heightened by one storey and extended at the rear with a stairwell by architect J.W. Hanrath. The hunting lodge has since been used as a summer house and is now used as a residence. The building originally consisted of a three-part layout with a slightly projecting central section and two equally large side sections. The plan is now T-shaped as a result of the addition of the stairwell. Beneath the left side section is a cellar. The house consists of a base of whitewashed brick (ground floor) and a superstructure of horizontally and vertically placed planks under a gently sloping gabled roof with half-hipped ends, furnished with decorative roof cornices; two brick chimneys on the ridge. During the heightening, the pointed arch windows with neo-Gothic tracery in the fanlight were moved to the upper storey; on the ground floor multi-pane windows and glazed doors with panel shutters have been applied. The front façade (east) has a whitewashed central risalit under a half-hipped roof with a window with neo-Gothic glazing bar tracery on either side; these 19th-century windows are the only ones not moved during the renovation. A wooden balcony is attached across the full width of the façade and a pergola stands in front of the central risalit. Around the house runs a narrow strip of pebble decorative paving which widens to a semi-circle in front of the house. Incorporated in it is a motto, now difficult to read. In the INTERIOR the original (Zocher) spatial arrangement on the ground floor has been preserved. This consists of three rooms in a row connected to each other by a short marble-lined passage. In this passage are two semi-circular corner cupboards as well as the doors and their surrounds. In the middle room is a whitewashed stucco fireplace niche from the building period. Other interior elements are found in the decorative tiling of the toilet and bathroom.

Valuation

The MAIN BUILDING (Het Berghuisje) is of general interest:

- because of its age;

- because of its striking location above the alpine meadow with views to Amerongse Berg;

- because of its architectural design in a combination of chalet and neo-Gothic style;

- as an example from the oeuvre of architect J.D. Zocher jr. and J.W. Hanrath;

- because of its functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
