The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG.

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de gaaf bewaarde structuur met vijfzijdige omgrachting en lanen;

- vanwege de landschappelijke kwaliteiten;

Description component 2: HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.

The core of the layout is formed by the extensively moated pentagonal castle island, accessible by means of the gateway; between the gate and the main building a short avenue planted with approximately 200-year-old linden trees ending at a small forecourt. On 19th-century topographic maps it can be seen that from the present Bosscheweg an access avenue ran, slightly east of the present avenue which was laid out around 1941 in the axis of the main building; the old avenue initially followed a straight course and subsequently ran with a bend towards the gateway. From the Gemertseweg a second access avenue ran parallel to the irregularly winding river the Aa; parts of this have been preserved. Due to the normalisation of the Aa (1941) both avenues no longer connect well with each other. South-east of the (main) access avenue lies a remnant of the original kitchen garden adjoining orchard, of which only a row of pollarded pear trees parallel to the drive reminds (further meadow). In the immediate surroundings of the house stand several solitary trees (walnut, brown beeches, swamp cypress, plane tree). On the Cadastral Minute from 1832 two rectangular ponds are indicated in the garden north-west of the house, of which only the most northern one still exists; north of the house lies an orchard with mainly half-standard pear trees. The castle grounds are mainly utilitarian in use, only on the south-east side has the moat been excavated to form a rectangular water feature, in which a small round islet with a chestnut and red beech (islet also on the 1832 map). The layout around the castle grounds is characterised by alternating open (meadows) and closed (coppice, poplar wood) sections intersected by walks planted with oaks and views over the river the Aa. Parallel to the south-west moat with a bend runs an avenue (on the Cadastral Minute of 1832 indicated as a watercourse and on the Topographic Military Map of 1897 for the first time as an avenue); originally to the right of the avenue an orchard (now poplar wood). At the end of this avenue on the west side remnants of a small-scale layout with several solitary trees (elm, common chestnut) and a remnant of a path.

Valuation

HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Eyckenlust is of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of the well-preserved structure with five-sided moat and avenues;

- because of its landscape qualities;

- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
