Inleiding.

Introduction.

The BOUNDARY FENCE of the St. Dionysius churchyard consists of two parts: on the street or west side a wrought-iron fence between pilasters (component IIA) and on the south side and partly on the north and east side a brick wall (component IIB).

Description.

The boundary fence on the street consists of a wrought-iron fence with three swing gates between brick corner pilasters and cast-iron Neo-Gothic pilasters with pinnacle cresting. On the corner pilasters stand four cast-iron sculptures. On the two middle pilasters stand, as accompaniment to the resting place, apocalyptic angels. On the outer ones stand a sculpture of John the Baptist and St. Joseph. The cast and wrought iron work was manufactured by the Tilburg iron foundry of Van der Schoot.

The pilasters and the underlying brick wall of the boundary fence are constructed from hand-formed brick laid in a cross bond. The pilasters have a hardstone basement. The brick wall has a hardstone saddle back. The brick wall on the three rear sides of the churchyard is constructed from hand-formed brick, separated by pilasters and provided with a saddle back. The wall has decorative brickwork below the saddle back.

Valuation.

The object is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as a special expression of the development of Catholicism in the nineteenth century, in particular the establishment of churches in place of older barn churches; it is also of significance as an example of the typological development of such church complexes. It has architectural-historical significance because of the Neo-Gothic formal language. The whole has ensemble values as part of a larger whole, the linearly built-up Goirkestraat, which is of national significance in cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning terms; also because of the location, connected with the development of the city and the particular significance of the complex for the appearance of the city. It is of significance because of the architectural-historical, building-technical, typological and functional rarity.
