Omschrijving onderdeel 2: Parkaanleg

Omschrijving

- het type bescheiden, uit een boerderij met herenkamer ontstane buitenplaats, zonder spectaculaire aanleg maar juist daarom zeer typerend voor de ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse buitenplaats vanwege het samengaan van vermaak en landbouw; als zodanig ook zeer zeldzaam;

- de tuinhistorische waarde van de verschillende onderdelen (oprijlaan met bomen en toegangshek, wandeling met bosschage en heuvel, fruitbomen en de gracht); de diverse, op de verschillende functies afgestemde beplanting; vooral de gracht vertegenwoordigt als waarschijnlijk oudste onderdeel een extra belang vanwege de ouderdom en de zeldzaamheid;

Description component 2: Park layout

Description

The park layout of the historic country estate Weilust consists mainly of the moat and the wood walls c.q. slopes directly adjoining it, the carriage drive with gate and the small-scale landscaped layout. The moat is protected to the extent that it still follows the course visible on old maps (J. Kuyper, Municipal atlas 1869 and Topographical map 1868/1893/1904). Thus not the later moat around the neighbouring property numbered 23. Access to the estate is formed by a carriage drive planted with chestnuts, with the moat on the left, a drainage channel on the right. The carriage drive is paved with bricks. Via the wrought-iron gate from approximately 1900 one enters the partly brick-paved yard around which the various buildings are situated: on the left the house, on the right the Flemish barn, further back the second barn. In front of the house is an open space; according to photographs this has been used as an ornamental garden. The open space is enclosed by thickets through which a winding path runs from the front door of the house (opposite the entrance gate) along the moat back to the house. The path runs through thickets which alternately consist of tall trees (chestnut, beech, copper beech, oak) and areas which (partly) consist of shrubs (holly, yew, rhododendron etc.). The walk passes over a small rise and offers views into the park (formerly also outward, for example towards the tower of the Grote Kerk). This winding walk, given its small scale, probably dates from the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The thicket appears on the maps of 1838-1857 and 1868/1893/1904. The moat, also mentioned by Craandijk, which apart from the carriage drive encloses virtually the entire plot, is based on map material from at least before 1824/1832 but probably much older. The transition from the front garden, primarily ornamental garden/park to the more utilitarian rear yard is marked by shrubs (magnolia, lilac) and fruit trees (pear, peach, medlar). Near the demolished farm section two pollard lindens. Along the moat on the rear side of the yard are trees that fit with this wetter part of the park and the agricultural character (willow, poplar, alder).

Valuation

The park layout of Weilust is of general importance because of:

- the type of modest country estate arising from a farm with manor chamber, without spectacular layout but for this very reason extremely typical of the development of the Dutch country estate because of the combination of pleasure and agriculture; as such also very rare;

- the garden-historical value of the various components (carriage drive with trees and entrance gate, walk with thicket and hill, fruit trees and the moat); the diverse planting tailored to the various functions; in particular the moat represents, as the probably oldest component, an additional importance because of its age and rarity;

- the beauty of the whole, of which not only the green elements form part but also the three monumental buildings: house, Flemish barn and second barn; the whole of park layout and buildings forms a functional, historical and visual unity.
