The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The SERVICE DWELLING was built in 1890-1892 as a service dwelling for the director of the former House of Detention (the current penitentiary institution for women), to the design of W.C. Metzelaar.

The extension against the southern side facade is from approximately 1910.

The building is incorporated in the perimeter wall dating from 1964-1965, which is of urban planning importance for the enclosed character of the House of Detention site.

The protection covers only the external aspect.

Description

Rectangular two-storey residential building with a gabled roof parallel to the street between spout gables. The roof is covered with grey cross tiles. Against the south facade stands a rectangular two-storey extension with a flat roof.

The building is constructed of hand-made red brick, laid in English bond. The only decoration consists of dark bands and stretches, which have in any case been partly lost during repairs. Hardstone is used for the plinth, the gutter, gutter brackets and coping plates of the spout gables.

In the arched wall openings of the front facade are six-pane sash windows. The front door has been recently renewed. Since the building was originally part of the perimeter wall, the rear facade is virtually blind. The two-storey extension likewise has brick facades of sober character. In the front and south facades are six-pane sash windows and composite windows.

Valuation

The service dwelling is of general importance. The building is part of a complex with cultural-historical values: it is important as a special expression of the development of the judiciary and the government's view of the treatment of detainees in the late nineteenth century; it is important as a special expression of the typological development of the prison with ancillary buildings, in particular the realisation of the panoptical type; it is important as a special expression of the technical development of constructions in iron and wood.

It has architectural-historical values: it is important for the history of architecture and building technique because of the application of advanced technical possibilities for the time; it is of particular importance in the oeuvre of the architects J.F. and W.C. Metzelaar; it is important because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design; it is important because of the special coherence between exterior and interior components.

It has ensemble values: it is important as an essential part of a larger whole, the ring-canal development and the urban layout of Breda, which is of national importance from a cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning perspective; it has special significance because of its location, connected with the development of the city and also has meaning for the appearance of the city.

Integrity/recognisability: it is important because of the architectural integrity of exterior and interior; it is important because of the architectural quality and the coherence of the constituent components (main and ancillary buildings, fencing, and the like).

Rarity: it is important as part of an interesting and coherent typological series of buildings which hierarchically range from prison and courthouse to service dwellings.
