Inleiding

Introduction

The SERVICE DWELLING was built in 1890-1892 as a service dwelling for the assistant director of the former House of Detention (the current Penitentiary Institution for Women), designed by W.C. Metzelaar.

The building is incorporated in the perimeter wall dating from 1964-1965, which is of urban planning importance for the enclosed character of the House of Detention site.

The protection includes only the external aspect.

The extension to the rear facade and the connecting link with the cell building are not considered part of the monument.

Description

Rectangular two-storey residential building with a gabled roof parallel to the street between spout gables. The roof is covered with grey cross tiles. The house is built of hand-moulded red brickwork, laid in English bond. The only decoration consists of dark bands and courses, which have moreover partially disappeared during repairs. Hard stone is used for the plinth, the gutter, gutter brackets and coping plates of the spout gables.

In the arched wall openings of the front facade are six-pane sash windows. The front door has been recently renewed.

Since the building is an integral part of the perimeter wall from its origin, the rear facade is almost completely blank.
