Inleiding.
ENERGIECENTRALE van het voormalig grootseminarie Bovendonk van het bisdom Breda, tussen 1905 en 1908 opgetrokken in Neogotische stijl naar plannen van P.J.H. Cuypers. In 1999 in gebruik als woning.
Omschrijving.
Blokvormig gebouw, opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen met tentdak met Maasleien gedekt. De muren vertonen siermetselwerk met ruitmotieven en worden afgesloten met een zaagtandlijst onder de goot. In de voorgevel een rechthoekige opgeklampte deur onder spitsboog, geflankeerd door spleetnissen. In de zijgevels een hooggeplaatste liggende raamstrook onder hardstenen latei met driedelige tuimelramen.
Waardering.
De voormalige energiecentrale van het seminarie is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een technische ontwikkeling, namelijk de toepassing op grotere schaal van voor de periode rond 1900 nieuwe technieken voor verwarming en verlichting. Het is architectuurhistorisch van belang vanwege de stijl en de sobere ornamentiek. Het is tevens van belang als laat voorbeeld van sobere utiliteitsbouw in het werk van de architect Cuypers. Block-shaped building, constructed from machine-made brick with tent roof covered with Meuse slate. The walls display decorative brickwork with diamond-pattern motifs and are finished with a sawtooth cornice below the eaves. In the front facade a rectangular clamped door under pointed arch, flanked by slit niches. In the side facades a high-placed horizontal window band under hard-stone lintel with three-part tumble windows.
Valuation.
The former energy centre of the seminary is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of a technical development, namely the application on a larger scale of techniques for heating and lighting that were new for the period around 1900. It is of architectural-historical significance due to the style and sober ornamentation. It is also of importance as a late example of sober utilitarian construction in the work of architect Cuypers. It has ensemble values due to its coherence with the total complex and is also of significance due to the history and development of the old Hof van Bovendonk.
