The register's description

Inleiding.

TOEGANGSHEK uit 1905-1907, behorende bij het PARK van het voormalig groot-seminarie Bovendonk van het bisdom Breda. De gebouwen zijn tussen 1905 en 1923 opgetrokken in Neo-Gotische stijl naar plannen van P.J.H. Cuypers en J.Th.J. Cuypers.

Omschrijving.

Neo-Gotisch hek met zware met hardsteen afgedekte bakstenen pijlers en bakstenen voetmuur. Tussen de pijlers twee langgerekte ijzeren hekken met siersmeedwerk en bekroningen met bladmotieven. Links en rechts van de pijlers die de dubbele hoofdpoort flankeren twee kleine looppoortjes met siersmeedwerk, opgehangen aan in smeedwerk uitgevoerde ajour bewerkte penanten. De vleugels van de hoofdpoort met siersmeedwerk met dubbele middenvoluten en bekronende siervoluten. Aansluitend op het hek de oprijlaan, uitlopend op een rond-point voor de hoofdingang. Links en rechts en aan de achterzijde wordt het hoofdgebouw ingesloten door een stelsel van lanen, deels van Amerikaanse eiken, deels van bruine beuken. Aan de zuidzijde is het park ingekort ten behoeve van woningbouw.

Waardering.

Het hek met park van het voormalig seminarie is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk de bloei van het seminarieonderwijs kort na 1900. Het is architectuurhistorisch van belang vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek en vanwege de aanleg van lanen, welke het karakter van het gebouw ondersteunen. Het hek is tevens van belang als laat voorbeeld van het werk van de architect Cuypers. Het heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de samenhang van de gebouwen en het park. The wings of the main gate with ornamental wrought-iron work with double central volutes and crowning ornamental volutes. Adjacent to the gate the drive, leading to a round-point before the main entrance. To the left and right and at the rear the main building is enclosed by a system of drives, some with American oak, some with brown beech. On the south side the park has been shortened to make way for housing.
