The register's description

Inleiding.

KAPEL van het voormalig groot-seminarie Bovendonk van het bisdom Breda, in 1921-1923 opgetrokken in Neo-Gotische stijl naar plannen van J.Th.J. Cuypers.

Omschrijving.

Niet georiënteerde driebeukige kapel, opgetrokken in machinale baksteen met spaarzame toepassing van siermetselwerk in gele baksteen en natuursteen. Zadel- en lessenaardaken met leien en ruberoidleien gedekt. De kapel telt vijf traveeën en een 5/8 sluiting. De voorgevel aan de binnenhof is een tuitgevel met een ondiep portaal met wimberg en topgevel. Erboven een compositie van klimmende spitsboognissen en spitsboogfriezen, waarbinnen links en rechts van een Jozefbeeld twee klimmende lancetramen. Links en rechts wordt de gevel afgesloten door traptorens tegen de kopgevels van de zijbeuken. De toren hebben achtzijdige topgeledingen met respectievelijk spitsboogvormige glasramen en galmopeningen. Achtzijdige spitsen. Links en rechts van de torens vormen eenlaags gangen met zadeldaken de verbinding met de seminarievleugels.

De zijgevels hebben een lichtbeuk met ingezwenkte steunberen. Per travee hebben zijbeuken en lichtbeuk een driedelige geleding van blindnissen met in de middelste nis een lancetraam. Het koor heeft een omgang met rechtgesloten kapellenkrans. Inwendig heeft de kapel een tweedelige opstand. Het metselwerk is uitgevoerd in geel genuanceerde baksteen. Op geaderd marmeren ronde kolommen rusten geprofileerde scheibogen. Boven een horizontale lijst bevindt zich de lichtbeuk met lancetramen. De ruimte is voorzien van kruisribgewelven in schoon metselwerk. In de koorkapellen altaren van Maria, Vincentius, Thomas, het H. Hart, Carolus Borromeüs en Francuscus van Sales uit de bouwtijd. Op het Maria-altaar onder meer de portretten van de architect Cuypers, zijn zoon en kleinzoon. Glasramen uit 1935-1936 met de levens van de genoemde heligen, gemaakt door C. Alberdingk uit het atelier Cuypers. Veelhoekige koperen lichtkroon in het middenschip. Kruisweg van Jan Dunselman.

Waardering.

De kapel van het voormalig seminarie is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk de bloei van het seminarieonderwijs en is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de seminariekapel. Het is architectuurhistorisch van belang vanwege de stijl, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Het is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de nabloei van de Neo-Gotiek in het werk van de architect J. Cuypers. Het heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de samenhang met het totale complex en is tevens van belang voor de geschiedenis en ontwikkeling van het oude Hof van Bovendonk. Het is tevens van belang in samenhang met de gaafheid van de omgeving. Het is een zeldzaam en gaaf voorbeeld van een dergelijk gebouw.

Description.

Non-oriented three-aisle chapel, erected in machine-made brick with sparse application of ornamental brickwork in yellow brick and natural stone. Gabled and lean-to roofs covered with slate and rubberoid slates. The chapel comprises five bays and a 5/8 apse. The front facade facing the inner courtyard is a spout gable with a shallow portal with ogee moulding and pointed gable. Above this a composition of rising pointed-arch niches and pointed-arch friezes, within which to the left and right of a statue of Joseph are two rising lancet windows. To the left and right the facade is closed off by stair towers against the gables of the side aisles. The towers have octagonal top sections with respectively pointed-arch shaped window panes and sound holes. Octagonal spires. To the left and right of the towers single-storey corridors with gabled roofs form the connection with the seminary wings.

The side facades have a clerestory with inset buttresses. Per bay the side aisles and clerestory have a threefold articulation of blind niches with in the central niche a lancet window. The choir has an ambulatory with straight-closed chapel ring. Internally the chapel has a two-storey elevation. The brickwork is executed in yellow-nuanced brick. On veined marble round columns rest profiled transverse arches. Above a horizontal moulding is located the clerestory with lancet windows. The space is provided with cross-ribbed vaults in fair-faced brickwork. In the choir chapels altars of Mary, Vincentius, Thomas, the Sacred Heart, Carolus Borromaeus and Francis of Sales from the construction period. On the Mary altar among others the portraits of the architect Cuypers, his son and grandson. Stained-glass windows from 1935-1936 with the lives of the aforementioned saints, made by C. Alberdingk from the Cuypers studio. Polygonal copper chandelier in the central nave. Stations of the Cross by Jan Dunselman.

Evaluation.

The chapel of the former seminary is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of spiritual development, namely the flourishing of seminary education and is likewise of importance as an example of the typological development of the seminary chapel.
