Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The friary "Huize Steenwijk" is located on an extensive landed estate with a park in the landscape style, on the western side of the Boxtelseweg. This forms part of a belt of landed estates on the southern side of the core of Vught. On the Steenwijk estate a country house was built in 1734, which in 1840 was replaced by a new building with Neo-Classical style elements. During the new construction, the foundations of the first country house were retained. In 1903 the country house was purchased by the Fraters of Tilburg, who added an extra storey to it and in 1905 erected two wings on either side of the building, creating a U-shaped ground plan. These extensions display Neo-Gothic style elements.
The friary consists of a wing with the main entrance, in which the old country house is integrated, with the transverse cloister chapel positioned to the right of it. On the far left in the cloister, a cross wing in which the recreation hall and dining hall were housed. This is connected to the main wing via a narrow passage. Adjacent to the chapel, a rectangular extension housing rooms for the brothers: this falls outside the protection due to later alterations and extensions. A more recent L-shaped extension adjoins the southern cross wing. This later addition also falls outside the protection.
In the gable of the choir of the chapel, a date stone with the name M.E. Sonmans and the date 30 March 1905 is set into the brickwork.
Description
The partially cellared cloister has a roughly U-shaped ground plan. The main building, the ground floor of which is formed by the former country house, comprises two storeys under a half-hipped roof with a roof turret, covered with interlocking tiles. On either side of this, two single-storey wings. The southern wing, which housed the dining hall and recreation hall, has a mansard roof with interlocking tiles. This building section is connected to the main building via a narrow passage. The chapel, positioned transversely to the main building, is single-nave and has a gabled roof with a roof turret, covered with interlocking tiles. The walls are built in brick with stretcher courses. Below the roofs is a dog-tooth frieze. The facades of the former country house are painted white.
The front facade of the main building, the ground floor of which consists of the former country house, has a symmetrical arrangement. The main entrance consists of a simple wooden door with a canopy and semicircular fanlight with sugar-loaf glazing bars. On either side of this, round-arched windows containing sash windows with six-pane lower lights and fanlights with sugar-loaf glazing bars. In the upper storey, dating from 1903, windows under segmental arches with T-sash windows with glazing bar divisions. The central section of the upper storey is accentuated by a higher stepped gable, in which a wall niche with a closure in the form of a trefoil arch. Within this a lancet-arched image niche with a statue of Saint Joachim. The stepped gable is crowned by a natural stone cross. Along the austere rear facade of the main building, a single-storey extension of recent date. Within this a corridor, in which the rear facade of the country house is retained: featuring round-arched windows, identical to the windows in the front facade. On the upper storey of the main building, round-headed windows with multi-pane sash windows. To the right of the main building, the choir side of the chapel. This is provided with a narrower apse with a three-sided closure. Within this, lancet windows, of which the two outer ones are filled with stained glass. In the side walls of the apse, smaller lancet windows coupled in pairs. Along the gable of the chapel, a rising dog-tooth frieze. Above the gable, a roof turret clad with zinc. On either side of the apse, low extensions with small hipped roofs. Within these, narrow lancet-arched windows coupled in pairs.
The northern chapel gable is divided into four bays by means of narrow buttresses. Per bay, two coupled tall lancet windows. In the roof above this northern gable, two small roof dormers. To the south of the main building, the wing for the recreation hall and dining hall. The end gable (eastern gable) of this consists of a combined stepped and spout gable and has a bay arrangement with wall niches between pilasters. The central wall niche of this ends in a lancet arch with above it a stepped gable. The flanking wall niches are closed by rising dog-tooth friezes. On the ground floor, at the height of the recreation hall, multi-pane sash windows under arches, with arched decorations in lighter brick. On the upper storey, in the central bay, a composite multi-pane sash window under a lancet arch, also here in two-tone decorative brickwork. On either side of this, smaller arched windows. In the southern gable, the recreation hall and dining hall are provided with large sash windows under a straight arch.
Both the dining hall and recreation hall have their own entrance on the garden side, consisting of a double glazed sliding door and tall fanlight. Between the recreation hall and dining hall, the southern gable is built higher and provided with two narrow lancet windows with simple stained glass at the height of a room where a small chapel was formerly housed. The interior of the cloister building has been somewhat altered over time. In the main building, the original layout, with the staircase at the rear, preceded by a large hall, is still present. Furthermore, original elements are only present in the chapel: here are notably the organ gallery, the cross-rib vaults in stucco, and the stained-glass windows in the apse depicting Saint Joseph and Mary. On the attic of the main building, remains of wooden chambrettes are still visible.
Valuation
The cloister "Huize Steenwijk" is of general importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as a special expression of the importance of Catholic congregations in North Brabant at the beginning of this century. It also provides a good illustration of the manner in which important landed estates in the vicinity of the bishopric of 's-Hertogenbosch were converted into Catholic cloisters and educational institutions. The cloister building is of architectural-historical importance as an example of the Neo-Gothic style, characteristic of Catholic cloister architecture around the turn of the century, and as an illustration of the evolution from country house to cloister. The cloister has ensemble value through the strong visual coherence between the landscape park and the buildings.
