Inleiding
Het openlucht TRANSFORMATORSTATION is gelegen aan de uiterste oostzijde van het complexterrein, ten zuiden van de Centraleweg. Het geheel bestaat uit een transformatoremplacement, een hijstoren, met aan de westzijde hiervan een lagere werkplaats. Het gebouw, ontworpen door prof. ir. G.J. van Swaaij, vertoont stijlelementen van het functionalisme en werd opgetrokken in 1930. Het transformatorstation stond in verbinding met het openluchtstation te Woensel.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw heeft een L-vormige plattegrond en bestaat uit een hijstoren onder flauw hellend zadeldak en een lager, tweelaags bouwdeel onder plat, waarin de werkplaats is ondergebracht. Ten noorden hiervan is het transformatoremplacement gesitueerd. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in baksteen, met staalskelet. De hijstoren heeft in de zuid- en oostgevel een hoog, rechtgesloten venster met kleine stalen roedenverdeling.
In de zuid-, oost- en westgevel een breed bandvenster, eveneens met kleine roedenverdeling in staal. In de noordgevel van de montagehal een grote muurnis, waarin een brede hefdeur.
Tegen de westgevel van de montagehal de werkplaats. Deze is in de zuidelijke en noordelijke gevel voorzien van vierkante vensters met kleine stalen roedenverdeling, gescheiden door smalle muurdammen. In de korte westelijke gevel smallere rechtgesloten vensters met kleine stalen roedenverdeling. Op de noordwestelijke hoek van de werkplaats een betonnen, op de hoeken afgerond balkon.
Waardering
Het openlucht transformatorstation is van algemeen belang. Het object bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling: het vormt een goede illustratie van de geschiedenis van de electriciteitsvoorziening in Noord-Brabant. Het object is voorts van belang als voorbeeld van een typologische ontwikkeling: het is illustratief voor het productie- en transportproces binnen een electriciteitscentrale. Het object bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de functionalistische stijl van de gebouwen. The open-air TRANSFORMER STATION is located at the far east side of the complex site, south of the Centraleweg. The whole consists of a transformer installation, a lifting tower, with on the west side of this a lower workshop. The building, designed by prof. ir. G.J. van Swaaij, displays stylistic elements of functionalism and was constructed in 1930. The transformer station was connected to the open-air station at Woensel.
Description
The building has an L-shaped floor plan and consists of a lifting tower under a gently pitched gabled roof and a lower, two-storey building section under a flat roof, in which the workshop is accommodated. To the north of this is the transformer installation situated. The building is constructed of brick, with a steel frame. The lifting tower has in the south and east facades a tall, straight-topped window with small steel glazing bars.
In the south, east and west facades a broad strip window, likewise with small steel glazing bars. In the north facade of the assembly hall a large wall recess, in which a broad lifting door.
