KANTINE uit 1939, naar ontwerp van M. Blokdijk.
Omschrijving
Hoge (tweelaagse) ruimte op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder plat dak. De voorgevel is voorzien van een reeks smalle staande ramen, bijna over de gehele hoogte doorlopend. De metalen kozijnen zijn op een doorlopende natuurstenen band geplaatst en hebben glas-in-loodramen met figuratieve voorstellingen (onder meer met de hoorn des overvloeds en wapens van de verschillende provincies). In de linkerzijgevel heeft het voorste gedeelte ronde ramen op de verdieping. Tegen de begane grond staat een éénlaags bouwblok met plat dak. In de achterste helft bevinden zich rechthoekige ramen.
Het interieur bestaat uit een driebeukige hal van acht traveeën lang. De constructie bestaat uit ronde zuilen met paddestoelkapiteel. Aan de straatkant (korte gevel van de kantine) is een groot gebrandschilderd glas-in-loodraam aanwezig. De voorstellingen geven het complete productieproces, van runderen als leverancier van het leer tot en met de verkoop van schoenen als het eindproduct weer. Het is gesigneerd Louis de Swart Breda. Ook de naam van de architect is in de ramen weergegeven.
Waardering
De kantine is van algemeen belang. Het kantine is van cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de economische- en typologische ontwikkeling van de schoenenindustrie en de bijbehorende gebouwentypen.
De kantine heeft architectuurhistorische waarden wegens de bijzondere samenhang van interieur en exterieur en wegens ornamentiek. Description
Large (two-storey) space on a rectangular ground plan under a flat roof. The front facade is provided with a series of narrow vertical windows, running almost over the full height. The metal frames are placed on a continuous natural stone band and have stained-glass windows with figurative representations (including the cornucopia and coats of arms of the various provinces). In the left side gable the front section has round windows on the first floor. Against the ground floor stands a single-storey building block with flat roof. In the rear half rectangular windows are located.
The interior consists of a three-aisle hall eight bays long. The structure consists of round columns with mushroom capitals. On the street side (short gable of the canteen) a large stained-glass window is present. The representations depict the complete production process, from cattle as supplier of leather through to the sale of shoes as the end product. It is signed Louis de Swart Breda. The name of the architect is also displayed in the windows.
