Inleiding

Introduction

Parish church, former rectoral church of St. Theresia, part of the complex of the former CARMELITE MONASTERY St. Theresia van Liseux, in a mixture of rationalist and neo-gothic stylistic forms, realized in 1925-1927 as the first phase of a larger whole never completed, designed by Phil. Donders. The complex further consists of the monastery building adjoining the novitiate (I), the Lourdes grotto (III) and the Sacred Heart statue (IV).

Description

Single-aisle cruciform church, built from partly sintered brick with mortared ornamental motifs and some natural stone, covered with gabled roofs with improved Dutch pantiles. The church has a nave of three bays with narrow aisles, preceded by a narrower and lower bay with entrance and singing gallery. This is flanked by two stepped-gable towers with mortared and plastered spires. The projecting transept has a bay on either side of the crossing. The choir consists of a choir bay with narrower apse, comprising a bay with three-sided closure, surrounded by a flat-topped, two-storey ambulatory.

The entrance front has an entrance portal with double door and fanlight with brick tracery and the text 'Hic domus dei est et porta coeli'. Above this a three-part pointed-arch window flanked by two sculptured figures. At the top the coat of arms of the Carmelites. The facade is crowned by a cross. The octagonal stepped-gable towers have slit windows and in the cornice below the spire pointed-arch windows. The side elevations of the nave have narrow pilasters and two-part pointed-arch windows. In the roof planes simple straight-topped dormers. The transept elevations are plain and have a three-part pointed-arch window. The right transept elevation is plastered. The choir closure is partly hidden from view by the ambulatory built slightly later, with pointed-arch windows below and six-part glazed windows above. On the monastery side a standing tooth indicating unexecuted expansion plans.

In the apse coupled pointed-arch windows with stained glass. Against the left transept, adjoining the monastery a square tower with later plastered upper section and overhanging bell housing with coupled pointed-arched sound holes and a slate spire transitioning via mortared coverings from four- to eight-sided. The interior is executed in red brick and grey sandstone for some of the wall surfaces. The church is covered with plastered stone cross-rib vaults. In the crossing a star vault, in the choir a composite star vault. The vaults rest on decorative brick corbelling. Shallow niches flank the nave. In the choir a three-part reredos with ornamental niches and a decorative tile floor with ornamental motifs in red, green and black. In the church space a simpler floor in grey and red.

In the transept a Theresia altar. In the Mary chapel brick and tile wainscoting, above which wall paintings. Simple neo-gothic furnishings and plaster saint statues. In choir and transept respectively three and two figurative stained-glass windows, including those dedicated to the church patroness Theresia. Painted Stations of the Cross. In the tower a partly concrete, partly wooden staircase. In the ambulatory below sacristy and store rooms fitted with concrete mushroom columns. Oak parquet floor and various credence tables and storage cabinets. Above this the former chapter house and monks' choir with wainscoting and fold-up choir stalls.

Valuation

The church is of general importance. The church building has, as a former pilgrimage destination, cultural-historical values as a particular expression of a cultural and spiritual development; it has architectural-historical values for the history of architecture and building technology; it is significant because of the particular coherence between the exterior and components of the interior; integrity/recognisability: the object is significant because of the high-quality architectural quality of the constituent components.
