Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Main building of the former CARMELITE CONVENT and novitiate of H. Theresia of Lisieux, in a mixture of rationalist and neo-Gothic style forms, realized in 1925-1927 as the first stage of a larger whole never completed, designed by Phil. Donders. The complex furthermore consists of the initially rectoral public convent church with bell tower (II), the Lourdes Grotto (III) and the Sacred Heart image (IV).
Description
Rectangular former novitiate building of three storeys above a basement, constructed of brick and connected by means of a two-storey intermediate section with gabled roof and light turret to the parish church. The building has a mansard roof covered with tuile-du-nord tiles, provided with a side shield on the side of the church. Front and rear facades are extremely simple and are articulated by four shallow, segment-arched recessed niches in bays. Each standard bay has two narrow, rectangular windows decreasing in height per storey, with leaded decorative edge above the roof ridges and since c. 1995 provided with plastic glazing. Each window originally corresponded with a bedroom. The same windows are found in the intermediate section. In the freestanding left side gable a shallow segment-arched recess with altered windows for the stairwell and a side entrance. The entrance is located in the rightmost bay of the front facade and consists of a projecting pointed-arch portal roofed with a lean-to, intersected by a right-angled inserted cap that connects to the top gable. Quarter-round staircase with curved stringers and double door with letterplate panels and four-part tracered fanlight in brick. In the top the coat of arms of the order.
Interiorly the building is extremely simple. The hall has a tile dado in yellow and black, on the right two freestanding columns and a ceiling from the period of construction. In the intermediate section a connecting passage to the stairwell in the tower of the church.
Valuation
The building is of general importance. The convent as convent and former place of pilgrimage has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of a cultural and spiritual development; it has architectural-historical values for the history of architecture and building technology; it is of importance because of the particular coherence between the exterior and components of the interior; integrity/recognizability: the object is of importance because of the high-quality architectural quality of the constituent parts.
