Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Opdrachtgever was D.T. Ruys.

Description
Introduction.
Belonging to the country estate, a GARDENER'S LODGE (2) built in 1914-1916 was designed by architect L.J. Zaaijer. The dwelling is a sober variant on the Neo-Historicist style of the main building, which is inspired by Dutch Classicism and English Country House style. The client was D.T. Ruys. The gardener's lodge stands on the Paauwlaan, at the beginning of the driveway to the southeast of the entrance gate.
Description.
Detached, partly cellaraged, service dwelling on a composite, somewhat T-shaped plan consisting of a ground floor and an attic storey. The composite roof, covered with smothered improved Dutch tiles, is formed by a gabled roof, of which the rear roof slope partly adjoins a small flat roof. Perpendicular to it a hipped roof with sag adjoins, which has chimneys with iron wind caps at both ridge angles. The roof has several small roof dormers with round-arched six-light windows and a larger roof dormer in the form of a serliana. The roof slopes have an overhang with a heavy gutter moulding resting on gutter brackets, executed as a frieze as part of a main cornice.
The facades are built up in dark red brick (Flemish bond) with slightly curved stretches at the bottom above doors and windows. Projecting brick plinth is covered by a white-painted sandstone ornamental moulding. The single and composite window arrangements consist of different types with casement windows, partly with fanlights, almost all provided with glazing bars. On the ground floor the windows with two-part window arrangements have green-painted shutters for the lower windows. For the upper storey windows hangs a wooden flower box resting on brackets.
The front facade facing the driveway (northwest) has on the left a projecting gable section with asymmetrical pointed gable and on the right a recessed gable section with cornice-topped facade. In the angle on the west side, beneath the roof overhang of the gabled roof, is a half-open entrance portal, which partly rests on a wooden pillar. The portal consists of a platform with ornamental brickwork, which is accessible via two steps on two sides. To the right of the projecting gable section is a two-part panelled door with an iron boot scraper next to it. Right on the ground floor and upper storey one window, in the gable top a brick diamond pattern. Left in the facade one window.
The right side facade (southwest) is a cornice-topped facade with two symmetrically placed windows. At the left side facade (northeast) on the right a cornice-topped gable section projects through the eaves. To the left of this is a cuckoo window above two cellar windows with above it a window which projects through the gutter moulding. At the east corner a porch. On the northeast side this is accessible via two steps and on the southeast side the porch is closed by a wooden balustrade which connects to a wooden pillar placed at the corner. The wooden two-part door is provided with panes. At the rear an asymmetrical spout gable, of which the left (southern) roof slope, halfway through, adjoins the flat roof of the stairwell, below which are two pairs of narrow windows of the stairwell. Against the projecting gable section adjoins on the left side (southwest) a wooden veranda with on the south side a twelve-light window. Over the full width the veranda is accessible via a staircase of two steps.
The interior, with regard to plan and detailing, is largely in the original state. Via the main entrance one enters a narrow passage which leads to a hall with a winding staircase with platform to the upper floor and a spiral staircase to the provision cellar. Both living rooms have a simple marble fireplace with built-in cupboards and stucco ceilings with Art Nouveau detailing. Furthermore various original elements, such as tiling in the toilet and black marble window sills.
Valuation.
The gardener's lodge dating from 1914-1916 is of general importance because of cultural-historical value through the typology as a functional and stylistic component of an extensive country estate, which came into being in one period at the beginning of the 20th century.
The gardener's lodge is of general importance because of architectural-historical value through the Neo-Historicist building style, which aligns with that of the country house.
Both interior and exterior are extremely intact in principal form, use of materials and detailing.
The porter's lodge has ensemble value through the spatial coherence with the other complex components and because of its image-defining siting on the Paauwlaan as an entrance to the country estate.
