The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The sugar warehouses (STORAGE BUILDINGS) from 1922 and 1926 respectively were built in Arts and Crafts style with elements of Transitional architecture. They were built along the quay and are surrounded by younger and older production buildings. They were built for the storage of sugar as general cargo and still serve this purpose.

Description.

The two sugar warehouses of comparable architecture, size and construction are on an L-shaped plan connected to each other, whereby the one from 1922 lies perpendicular to the waterway and that from 1926 runs parallel to the waterway. Both are built up from an iron frame structure with brick facades and fitted with a gabled roof laid with bitumen. Both have in the long facades a light strip running along the entire length of the facade, fitted with iron windows. Both halls have a bay division of mortared pilasters and are provided with a stuccoed plinth with a concrete speckled course slightly above. The warehouse from 1922 is more richly detailed with in the transverse facades a nine-part bay division with mortared pilasters and a profiled, mortared cornice. It has a raised central ridge with gabled roof, laid with bitumen. The interior of this hall was divided into two in a later period by a partition wall at the location of the timber-framed middle columns, which support the roof structure. Along the walls and in the middle reinforced, riveted iron timber-framed posts have been placed to support the overhead crane. The roof is built up of iron V-trusses. The warehouse from 1926 is completely open and has several iron columns in the middle supporting the roof structure. The roof structure consists of iron lattice girders. The concrete coffered ceiling is from a later period.

Valuation.

The sugar warehouses are of general importance. They have cultural-historical value as illustrative representatives of the history of the Dutch sugar industry which had its most important concentration in the northwest of the province of North Brabant (the Sugar Corner) and as an example of the type of modernizing sugar factory. They have architectural-historical value as an example of Arts and Crafts building style with classical elements. They have building-historical value because of the applied iron structures. They have ensemble value because of their relationship with the other complex components. In connection with the sugar warehouse from 1909 and the sugar silos not nominated for protection, they provide a complete picture of the historical development of Dutch sugar storage. They are well preserved and are rare as an example of the type of sugar warehouse in the Netherlands.
