Inleiding.
Het suikerpakhuis (OPSLAGGEBOUW) uit 1909 in Ambachtelijk-Traditionele bouwstijl is midden op het fabrieksterrein gelegen en ingebouwd door jongere productiegebouwen. Het is gebouwd voor de opslag van suiker in stukgoed en is als zodanig in gebruik geweest tot de jaren zestig, toen de suiker als bulkgoed werd opgeslagen. Nu is het in gebruik als emballagemagazijn.
Omschrijving.
Het hoogopgaande suikerpakhuis op rechthoekig grondplan heeft een betonnen casco, opgevuld met machinale ijsselstenen. De centrale beuk heeft een schaaldak, belegd met bitumen, evenals de lessenaarsdaken van beide zijbeuken. De betonnen lisenen in de voorgevel, op de hoeken en op de scheiding van de midden- en zijbeuken, lopen uit in licht geprofileerde pinakels die boven de betonnen daklijst uitsteken. In de zijwanden van de verhoogde middenbeuk zijn vensters geplaatst. In de topgevel van de voorgevel is een licht getoogd venster met vijfdelig raam geplaatst. In beide zijvleugels van de voorgevel is een rondvenster met ijzeren raam geplaatst. De overige gevelopeningen zijn in later tijd gewijzigd. De topgevel wordt doorsneden door een iets uit het midden geplaatste, omhuisde transportband, die door het gehele pakhuis heen loopt. Trekspanten houden het schaaldak bijeen. Beide zijbeuken hebben een betonnen verdiepingvloer, steunend op ijzeren, geklonken vakwerkstaanders.
Waardering.
Het suikerpakhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als illustratieve vertegenwoordiger van de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse suikerindustrie die een belangrijkste concentratie kende in het noordwesten van de provincie Noord-Brabant (de Suikerhoek) en als voorbeeld van het type moderniserende suikerfabriek. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van Ambachtelijk-Traditionele bouwstijl. Het heeft bouwhistorische waarde als vroeg voorbeeld van betonconstructie. Het heeft ensemblewaarde vanwege de samenhang met de andere complexonderdelen. In samenhang met de suikerpakhuizen uit 1922 en 1926 en de niet voor bescherming voorgedragen naoorlogse suikersilo's, geeft het een compleet beeld van de historische ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse suikeropslag. The sugar warehouse (STORAGE BUILDING) from 1909 in Craftsman-Traditional building style is situated in the middle of the factory grounds and built in by younger production buildings. It was built for the storage of sugar in packaged goods and was used as such until the nineteen-sixties, when sugar was stored as bulk goods. It now serves as a packaging warehouse.
Description.
The tall sugar warehouse on a rectangular ground plan has a concrete frame, filled with machine-made ijssel bricks. The central aisle has a barrel vault roof, covered with bitumen, as well as the lean-to roofs of both side aisles. The concrete pilasters in the front facade, on the corners and on the division of the central and side aisles, terminate in lightly profiled pinnacles that project above the concrete roof line. Windows have been placed in the side walls of the raised central aisle. In the gable of the front facade a slightly arched window with five-part frame has been placed. In both side wings of the front facade a circular window with iron frame has been placed. The remaining facade openings have been altered in later times. The gable is intersected by an enclosed conveyor belt placed slightly off-centre, which runs through the entire warehouse. Roof trusses hold the barrel vault roof together. Both side aisles have a concrete floor slab, resting on iron, riveted lattice girders.
Valuation.
The sugar warehouse is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an illustrative representative of the history of the Dutch sugar industry which had its most important concentration in the north-west of the province of North Brabant (the Sugar Corner) and as an example of the type of modernising sugar factory. It has architectural-historical value as an example of Craftsman-Traditional building style. It has building-historical value as an early example of concrete construction. It has ensemble value because of its coherence with the other complex components. In conjunction with the sugar warehouses from 1922 and 1926 and the post-war sugar silos not nominated for protection, it provides a complete picture of the historical development of Dutch sugar storage. It is relatively well preserved and rare as a sugar warehouse in the Netherlands.
