Inleiding.
Het KANTOORGEBOUW uit 1920 is gebouwd in Expressionistische bouwstijl. Het is tegen de dijk gebouwd en langs de weg gelegen. Intern is het verbonden met de directeurswoning en aan de achterzijde met de kantoor-nieuwbouw, die buiten de bescherming valt.
Omschrijving.
Het tweelaags kantoorgebouw onder samengesteld schilddak is gebouwd op L-vormig grondplan en heeft een betonnen casco met bakstenen gevels. De voorgevel grenst aan de dijk, die tot halverwege de eerste bouwlaag reikt. Deze gevel kent een driedeling in een centrale ingangspartij met twee zijrisalieten, voorzien van lisenen met verticale baksteenornamenten. Zijrisalieten en middenpartij zijn voorzien van een horizontale tandlijst onder de dakgoot. De voorgevel heeft een hardstenen plint en dito waterlijst tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag. De zijrisalieten kennen een vierdeling van rechtgesloten vensters met hardstenen onderdorpels in de tweede bouwlaag. De vierdeling zet zich voort in de gevelnissen onder de vensters en in de halve vensters van de eerste bouwlaag. De ramen zijn rond 1990 vervangen door aluminium kozijnen. De dubbele houten paneeldeur ligt iets uit het midden, onder een getoogd, driedelig bovenlicht. De lijstgoot rust op klossen. Het dak is belegd met eterniet-leien in kruisdekking. De linker risaliet is gelegen onder afgeplat schilddak met dakkapel. Ook het schilddak boven de middenpartij is voorzien van een dakkapel. De rechter risaliet is gelegen onder tentdak. De zij- en achtergevel kennen een vergelijkbare, maar minder gedetailleerde indeling. De achtergevel heeft een erkervormige uitbouw met afgeronde hoeken. De entree en de centrale hal zijn van elkaar gescheiden door een houten kozijn met rijk gedetailleerde glas-in-loodramen uit 1948. De centrale hal heeft een terrazzo vloer, rijk gedetailleerde eikenhouten lambriseringen en dito verwarmingskasten, alsmede een glazen lichtkap. Aan de achterzijde van de tweede bouwlaag is de rijk ingerichte bestuurskamer gelegen, met parket op de vloer, bewerkte eikenhouten lambriseringen tegen de wanden en dito deuren, deurposten, schouwomkasting, wandkast en verwarmingskasten, voorts is de bestuurskamer voorzien van een centrale marmeren schouw, gobelins tegen de muren, een eikenhouten en bewerkte verkenning langs een gestuct plafond en een rijk gedetailleerd glas-in-lood raam in de uitgebouwde erker. Centraal in de kamer staat de halfronde, bewerkte eikenhouten bestuurstafel. Het trappenhuis heeft een bewerkte eikenhouten balustrade en een betegelde lambrisering.
Waardering.
Het kantoorgebouw is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als illustratieve vertegenwoordiger van de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse suikerindustrie die een belangrijkste concentratie kende in het noordwesten van de provincie Noord-Brabant ('de Suikerhoek') en als voorbeeld van het type moderniserende suikerfabriek. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van Expressionistische bouwstijl en vanwege de rijke inrichting. Het heeft bouwhistorische waarde vanwege de toegepaste bouwmaterialen. The two-storey office building under a composite hipped roof is built on an L-shaped plan and has a concrete frame with brick facades. The front facade borders on the dike, which extends to halfway the first storey. This facade has a three-part division in a central entrance section with two side risalits, provided with lisenes with vertical brick ornaments. Side risalits and central section are provided with a horizontal tooth moulding under the roof gutter. The front facade has a stone plinth and likewise a drip moulding between the first and second storey. The side risalits have a four-part division of right-angled windows with stone sills in the second storey. The four-part division continues in the wall panels below the windows and in the half-windows of the first storey. The frames were replaced around 1990 by aluminium windows. The double wooden panelled door is situated slightly off-centre, under an arched three-part fanlight. The cornice gutter rests on consoles. The roof is covered with asbestos slates in cross-lap bond. The left risalit is located under a flattened hipped roof with roof dormer. The hipped roof above the central section is also provided with a roof dormer. On the rear side of the second storey is the richly appointed boardroom located, with parquet on the floor, worked oak wainscotting against the walls and likewise doors, door posts, chimney surround, cupboard and heating cabinets, furthermore the boardroom is provided with a central marble chimney surround, tapestries against the walls, an oak and worked cornice along a stuccoed ceiling and a richly detailed leaded-glass window in the extended bay. Central in the room stands the semicircular, worked oak boardroom table. The stairwell has a worked oak balustrade and tiled wainscotting.
Valuation.
The office building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an illustrative representative of the history of the Dutch sugar industry which had an important concentration in the northwest of the province of North Brabant ('the Sugar Corner') and as an example of the type of modernising sugar factory.
