Inleiding.

Introduction.

At the left lane in the northwestern corner of the cemetery lie the grave monuments of the Bolsius family, oriented northwest. The GRAVE MONUMENT of Antoon Bolsius, who died in 1906, lies to the northeast (on the left side) of the preceding family grave. It dates from 1907 and was made by Jan Custers from Stratum (Eindhoven). Stylistically it combines influences of Neo-Baroque, Neo-Gothic, Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau. Antoon Bolsius was of great importance for the prosperity and industrial development of Schijndel and the surrounding area. Under his leadership the candle industry was able to develop. In a factory founded in 1871, at that time the largest in the Netherlands, initially only beeswax was bleached. This was supplied to vergers who subsequently made candles from it. From 1920 onwards candles were produced at the wax bleachery itself. The factory survived the crises of the nineteen twenties and thirties without difficulty and the 'Bolsius Group' nowadays belongs to the largest candle producers in the world.

Description.

The grave monument occupies a rectangular footprint. Towards the southeast the various components increase in height.

On a low, surrounding cemented brick plinth lies a dressed hardstone base of slightly smaller size. The hardstone tomb resting on this, partly with a slightly rising ridge rib, merges at its head-end into the lower part of a two-part superstructure placed at right angles to it. By means of two copper rods this superstructure is connected to two decoratively sculpted small pilasters at the opposite corner points. The rectangular component of the superstructure with bevelled upper edges passes into an upper section with inward- and outward-curving forms. In the sides of this are coat of arms shields bordered with foliage chiselled in, in the front face floral motifs alongside a cruciform shape with a banderol bearing the text 'CRUCE ET ARATRA'.

On the superstructure stands a limestone sculptural group, situated in a field with agricultural produce created here and there by farming, with on the right a standing farmer with spade, on the left a seated grieving woman and diagonally behind her a young girl who lifts a wreath towards the effigy of Bolsius in a bell-gavel-like structure. On the sides of this stylised plant motifs and a wreath, on the reverse two crossed palm fronds, symbolic of Victory in the sense of the happy completion of life. On the front face a chiselled epitaph bearing, amongst other things, 'To the blessed memory of (...) ANTONIUS JACOBUS MARIA BOLSIUS (...)'. In the front of the slightly outward-curving head of the rear structure is a marble portrait of Anton Bolsius placed, on the reverse the letters 'R.I.P' are chiselled. The structure is crowned by a likewise limestone sculpture of a risen Christ depicted blessing and barefoot with an iron banner in his hand.
