Inleiding.
Ter linkerzijde van het kruisbeeld bevind zich een verzameling graven van de geestelijkheid waarvan het GRAFMONUMENT van pastoor en Apostolisch Vicaris Antonius van Alphen (1748-1831) voor bescherming in aanmerking komt. Van Alphen was pastoor in Schijndel van 1787 tot 1790.
Het op het noordwesten georiënteerde grafmonument behoort stilistisch tot de Neo-gotiek en kan op grond van de stijlkenmerken gedateerd worden in het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw.
Omschrijving.
Het smalle, uit baksteen, hardsteen en zandsteen bestaande grafmonument beslaat een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het is symmetrisch en frontaal gericht en rijst hoog op waarbij het door versnijdingen steeds smaller wordt.
Op een bakstenen plint staat een brede sokkel met afgeschuinde bovenranden waarop zich een tweedelige opstand verheft. Het hardstenen onderdeel hiervan, met afgebiljoende hoeken aan de voorzijde en met een geprofileerde, licht overstekende afdekplaat, heeft aan de voorzijde een ingebeiteld epitaaf met daarop onder andere de tekst: '(...) ANTONII VAN ALPHEN S.T.L. (...) PLACIDE EXPIRAT A MDCCCXXXI (...)'. Het zich verjongende hardstenen bovendeel wordt afgesloten met een topgevel, op de nok bekroond met een kruis op een sokkel en op de schouderstukken met kantelen op een hoge sokkel. Onder de schouderstukken overhoeks geplaatst floraal werk. In de voorzijde is een spitsboognis met neg uitgespaard. De bovenzijde van de nis is omtrokken met ingebeitelde epitaaf 'BEATI QUI PERSECUTIONEM PITIUNTUR PROPTER JUSTITIAM' uit het evangelie van Mattheus, met daarboven in de geveltop een Christusmonogram. Onder de nis een in een gelobde veertienpas gevatte voorstelling van een wapen waarboven een kardinaalshoed van waaruit kwasten het wapen omsluiten. In de nis een zandstenen voorstelling in licht reliëf van een verrijzenis-scène met links en rechts een staande en een zittende slapende soldaat in soldatenkostuum en centraal een gevleugelde engel in lang, licht geplooid gewaad die Christus, bebaard en blootvoets, aan de hand meevoert.
Waardering.
Het grafmonument van pastoor en Apostolisch Vicaris Antonius van Alphen is van algemeen belang.
Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van de rooms-katholieke grafcultuur aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw en van een sociale ontwikkeling. Het feit dat het hier gaat om de persoon van Van Alphen, tussen 1790 en 1831 Apostolisch Vicaris van het vicariaat 's-Hertogenbosch, maakt het object waardevol voor de geschiedenis van het katholicisme en het bisdom Den Bosch.

On the left side of the crucifix is a collection of graves of the clergy, of which the GRAVE MONUMENT of parish priest and Apostolic Vicar Antonius van Alphen (1748-1831) is worthy of protection. Van Alphen was parish priest in Schijndel from 1787 to 1790.
The grave monument, oriented northwest, stylistically belongs to the Neo-Gothic and can be dated to the last quarter of the nineteenth century on the basis of its stylistic characteristics.
Description.
The narrow grave monument, consisting of brick, hardstone and sandstone, occupies a rectangular footprint. It is symmetrical and frontally oriented and rises to considerable height, becoming narrower through successive recesses.
On a brick plinth stands a broad base with bevelled upper edges on which a two-part superstructure rises. The hardstone component of this, with chamfered corners at the front and with a moulded, slightly projecting coping slab, has an epitaph chiselled into the front face bearing, among other things, the text: '(...) ANTONII VAN ALPHEN S.T.L. (...) PLACIDE EXPIRAT A MDCCCXXXI (...)'. The tapering hardstone upper section is crowned with a stepped gable, on the ridge crowned with a cross on a base and on the shoulder pieces with crenellations on a tall base. Below the shoulder pieces, floriated work positioned diagonally. In the front face is a pointed arch niche with tracery. The upper edge of the niche is bordered with a chiselled epitaph 'BEATI QUI PERSECUTIONEM PITIUNTUR PROPTER JUSTITIAM' from the Gospel of Matthew, with above it in the gable top a Christogram. Below the niche, a representation of a coat of arms set within a lobed fourteen-foil, above which a cardinal's hat from which tassels enclose the arms. In the niche a sandstone representation in low relief of a resurrection scene with on the left and right a standing and a seated sleeping soldier in military uniform and centrally a winged angel in long, lightly pleated drapery who leads Christ, bearded and barefoot, by the hand.
Valuation.
The grave monument of parish priest and Apostolic Vicar Antonius van Alphen is of general importance.
It has cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of the development of Roman Catholic grave culture at the end of the nineteenth century and of a social development. The fact that this concerns the person of Van Alphen, between 1790 and 1831 Apostolic Vicar of the vicariate 's-Hertogenbosch, makes the object valuable for the history of Catholicism and the Diocese of Den Bosch.
