Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

The Neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Church of St. JOHN THE BAPTIST was built between 1912 and 1913 according to a design by architect C.F. van Hoof in Neo-Gothic style. On 5 July 1913 the church was consecrated by chaplain Völker. At the consecration of the church in 1915 the predecessor from 1853 was demolished. This Waterstaatskerk stood at the location where the former patronage building now stands. The current stained-glass windows were installed in 1963. The ironwork was renewed in old style in 1991.

Description

The Neo-Gothic three-aisle cruciform church with double-tower front and roof lantern has a nave of six bays and transept arms of two bays with three-eighths closure. After the transept follow two choir bays with side chapels and finally the choir itself, also two compartments, with a five-eighths closure. The facades are built of brown machine-made brick with bands of yellow brick, provided with buttresses with tiled offsets. Below the gutter lines decorative friezes are laid for decoration. On the gabled and sloping roofs lie slate in Maas bond, as well as on the spire points of the towers and the roof lantern on the crossing. The corner roof lantern is open with trefoil-shaped sound holes for the angelus bell.

The towers of four storeys stand on either side of the central nave with extended portal. The lower three storeys of the towers are provided with pointed arch windows and pointed arch friezes. Above this follows a bell storey with two sound holes and triangular crockets with rising arch frieze, crowned by a zinc weathervane. The clock faces are set in circles above the pointed arches of the sound holes. On both tall octagonal towers stands a wrought-iron cross, on the left also a weathercock.

The entrance consists of a three-sided entrance portal. The middle section has a stepped gable with colonnade portal and a natural stone cross as crowning. In this broad central section are two sets of wing doors with ornamental fittings, the lintels are inscribed and the pointed arch fanlights have brick tracery. Between the doors is placed an image of the crowned Mary with Child. Above this a round window; in the crocket a trefoil. In the angled sides are recessed wing doors with ornamental fittings and an oval window as fanlight in a trefoil. The upper side of these entrances is straight; the connection with the front is made by a buttress with pedestal, empty niche and crowned canopy.

The stepped gable at the entrance is repeated in the building mass above, complete with lancet windows, rising round-arch frieze and a cross as crowning. The side aisles have per bay two pointed arch windows, the clerestory has triple windows. To the left and right of the first bay there is a polygonal closed side chapel.

The end gables of the transepts have above a niche storey two pointed arch windows. The choir has pointed arch windows in the ambulatory and above them tall lancet windows.

The interior consists of clean brickwork. The elevation is two-part and has composite pillars which are provided with glazed brick bands and a clerestory with triple windows above a triforium. The side aisles have cross-rib vaults, the nave has star vaults. The choir has a two-part elevation with ambulatory and slender windows. The pillars of the ambulatory have, in contrast to the sober other capitals, capitals with foliage. The side chapels have polygonal closures. The ribs are in contrast to the white vault surfaces and masonry of dark moulded stone.

The church possesses a rich Neo-Gothic inventory. Important are the limestone high altar and the limestone pulpit with Christ and the four Evangelists, both made in 1915 by Custers from Eindhoven. After 1915 Custers supplied many saint images such as that of St. Paul and St. Peter. Dating from around 1915 is an image of St. John the Baptist. In the choir hangs a large rood cross.

In the church stand oak church benches with sober Neo-Gothic ornament. Older components are the copper baptismal font from c. 1800 and the various saint images from the period 1874-1900, supplied by M. van Bokhoven. The organ was supplied by Vollebregt in 1854; the upper section is adorned with sculptures of David with harp and other musicians. The Stations of the Cross were painted on copper in 1890 by Hugo Kohl.

Valuation

The church building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as part of a Catholic group, a prime example of the development of Catholicism in North Brabant. Architecturally it is of importance as a representative of the Neo-Gothic work of the architect, whereby centralising tendencies and use of modern materials for that time such as glazed brick are combined with a traditional Neo-Gothic design. The complex has ensemble value because of its great significance for the appearance of the entire Langstraat, in particular as an example of the development of the nineteenth-century church village in South Netherlands. The building is valuable because of the integrity of the interior and exterior.
