Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
On the site bounded by Baroniestraat to the south, the Smalwater to the north, the church to the west and the St. Ursulaklooster to the east stands the PRESBYTERY (2), connected via a covered passage to the adjoining church building, with a garden in front, to the right side and behind containing various solitary trees and fruit trees. At the front, on either side of the entrance drive to the rear courtyard and on the east side near the St. Ursulaklooster a wrought-iron ornamental fence, partly on a stone base and between brick pillars with sandstone coping. The presbytery was built in 1900-1901 to a design by C. Franssen. The original fencing running around the presbytery, church and church square was a gift from the parishioners. On the inside of the two front fence pillars along the entrance drive to the rear courtyard are two memorial stones set in with the text: 'IN REMEMBRANCE / OF THE 25-YEAR / EXISTENCE OF THE / PARISH OF THE SACRED / HEART OF JESUS / 13 JUNE 1901' and 'PRESENTED BY / THE PARISHIONERS / TO THE FOUNDER / PASTOR ERAS / 13 JUNE 1926'. The passage building, which connects the presbytery with the church, was also built only after the completion of the presbytery.
Description.
The partly cellared brick building has an almost square-shaped floor plan with a projecting section on the west side of the front facade and on the east side of the rear facade. It has two storeys with an attic storey under a composite hipped roof with slates in Maas bond. On the flat roof a four-sided roof lantern, composed of four pinnacles flanked by splayed braces with trefoil motif under a needle spire with weathervane. In the roof slopes a number of small roof dormers under overhanging hipped dormer roof with lead cresting. The gutter lines of the projecting gutters are lined with slates. The front facade, laid in English bond, is enlivened by ornamental brickwork in the arch spandrels and in bands under the continuous sandstone string-courses and drip mouldings below the windows, a projecting roof cornice with frieze featuring trefoil motif and dentil course, wrought ornamental wall anchors, the use of sandstone in the coping on the gable top, as a springing stone and in the projecting plinth, and the use of moulded stone around the window openings. The remaining facades are detailed in the same manner. The asymmetrical front facade is five bays wide, of which the two left bays form a projecting symmetrical volume ending in a pointed gable with shoulder pieces and a sandstone cruciform finial on the top. Corner pilasters merge into the gable top into a characteristic trefoil-shaped surround, in which a two-light sash window under a pointed relieving arch is placed. In both storeys two T-windows under segmental arches. Centrally in the front facade is the front door under a canopy, composed of an originally glazed coping plate and iron profiles with richly neo-Gothic wrought ornamental work featuring volutes and floral motifs. The glazed, double panel door has wrought iron window grilles, further on the ground floor two and on the upper floor three T-windows as mentioned above. Some of the windows are equipped with built-in roller shutters. On the corner a pilaster. In the side wall of the projecting building volume in both storeys a narrow two-light window under a pointed arch with decorative arch spandrel. On the right side facade a one-storey bay window under a flat roof with pointed arch fanlights with leaded lights. On the rear side among other things a long one-storey extension with an attic storey under a gabled roof. Window openings under segmental and round arches, sandstone footings. To this extension adjoin an open brick segmental arch gateway giving access to the courtyard and a shed built against it. The covered passage adjoining the left side facade between presbytery and church has a low-pitched lean-to roof with moulded gutter on corbels and has in the middle a pair of double sliding doors in a segmental arch opening to the rear courtyard. Projecting plinth, cut buttresses and lancet windows. Internally the original layout has been preserved. There are significant interior elements from the building period present. In many places (hinged doors draught vestibule, door in hall, windows on the landings in the stairwell, four-part sliding doors to living spaces) etched glass, very detailed polychrome tile floor in hall and vestibule, further in the hall small frieze with trefoil motif in woodcarving, monumental flight of stairs with two decoratively carved newel posts and above a composite carved cornice with figurative keystones, in the rooms panelled (sliding) doors with moulded joinery, partially painted stucco ceilings, various carved black and beige marble fireplaces, polished marble window sills, wall cupboards with wooden pediment, various fanlights with leaded lights and three cellars with barrel vault and red tiles.
Valuation.
The presbytery with fencing and garden is of general interest. The whole has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the development of the Roman Catholic church in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century regarding use and appearance. It has architectural-historical value because of the place of the work within the oeuvre of architect Franssen, the aesthetic qualities of the design in combination with the very detailed use of materials and the very rich ornamentation in the interior. It has ensemble values as an essential part of a historically grown religious ensemble, consisting of the church to the west of the presbytery, the cemetery, the (grave) sculptures and the adjoining St. Ursulaklooster. This ensemble forms an important part of the Boxtel station district, which around 1900 developed into a separate parish. Furthermore important as a visual component of the historic buildings along Baroniestraat. The object is of importance because of the integrity of the main form and large parts of the interior. Further because of the high quality of the constituent parts, consisting of presbytery, associated passage building, garden and ornamental fencing.
