Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The block of four STAFF DWELLINGS is part of a complex of eight dwellings from 1928 in Expressionist style, in a variant of the Amsterdam School. It is a design by architect Ingwersen. The other components of the complex are: I four staff dwellings (mirror image of component II); III shed of dwelling 156; IV shed of dwelling 170 (mirror image of III); V boundary fence at the street.
Together the components form a symmetrical whole in relation to each other. The dwellings are situated on the ribbon development connecting road between Tilburg and Goirle. They have a communal forecourt at the front and a private yard at the rear that is crossed by the communal unpaved "own" road. The rear part of the yard, which is furthest from the dwelling, was originally intended as a vegetable garden. Access to the rear yards is located next to dwelling 156 at the corner of the block. Moreover, 162 has a shared rear alley with 164, directly from the street. The dwellings were built for the Tilburg Metal Wire Lamp Factory N.V. on the Broekhovenseweg, later Volt B.V., mainly for the senior staff of the company itself. However, non-company-related people have always lived there too. In order to attract company staff from outside the region, an attractive building location was chosen. The dwellings were spacious and modern for that time. The yard even provided space for a private vegetable garden. Major maintenance of the front and back gardens was originally carried out by the factory. The Housing Foundation Aert Swaens, dating from 1935 and originally intended for Philips housing construction in and around Tilburg, managed the dwellings until 1964. After that they were transferred to the Foundation Duke Henry of Lotharingia, a housing corporation in the municipality of Veldhoven, which also manages and operates much housing construction for Philips. Volt B.V. became a full Philips subsidiary in May 1979. A similar complex of dwellings is located on the Treurenburgstraat/Parklaan in Eindhoven, but without vegetable gardens.
Description.
The block of four staff dwellings has an elongated floor plan with an asymmetrical front facade composition. Each dwelling is different in size and appearance. The smallest is at the left corner and the largest at the right corner. They consist of two storeys. The largest dwelling, together with the entrance section/balcony of the adjacent dwelling, projects in the front facade. It is covered by a hipped roof with the ridge perpendicular to the street and a vertical roof slope in the side facade down to the first storey. It has a round-arched front door, a two-part window on the ground floor and a three-part one on the upper storey. The latter window, with small glazing bars, has an extended wooden window box across the full width. Above the front door there is an Expressionist false chimney in the roof. The other dwellings are covered by a gabled roof with the ridge parallel to the street. The smallest dwelling has a single-storey section with a projecting hip end and a vertical section that resembles a mansard. They have straight front doors. Two are positioned with a nine-pane vestibule window under a shared wooden canopy, which forms one unit with the wooden gutter of the left corner dwelling. The third is located in the side of the extended entrance section, with a vestibule window in the front executed in leaded glass. On the ground floor three-part windows and on the upper storey below the gutter of the gabled roof one continuous fourteen-part window, containing thirteen pivot sashes and one French door. The frames have a horizontal glazing bar division. The side facades of the corner dwellings are symmetrical in layout. In the left side facade there is an expressive chimney in the middle with an angled side on the side of the roof slope. On the ground floor the chimney is flanked by a window and in the roof by a roof dormer. The right side facade has a two-part window on the ground floor. Besides a rear door and kitchen window, the rear facades have French windows and on the upper storey a continuous multi-part window as in the front facade. The smallest dwelling together with the neighbouring dwelling have a shared balcony in the rear facade.
The masonry consists of red/purple brickwork laid in chain bond. For the entrance of dwelling 160 a small masonry buttress-like element with a cement ball on the base. Next to the adjacent leaded glass window cubic cement elements. The leaded glass contains an image of a laboratory-like flask. Red tile work on the parapet between the front doors of numbers 156 and 158. The roofs are covered with red newly improved Dutch tiles. On the corner of the smallest dwelling stands a detached shed (separate monument number 525650), at the other dwellings it stands on the rear yard.
Valuation.
The complex is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a cultural and socio-economic development, in particular the industrialisation of Tilburg. It is important as an example of the typological development of staff housing construction. It has architectural-historical importance because of its place in the work of architect Ingwersen. The whole has been preserved in good condition and as a coherent complex of staff dwellings is fairly rare.
