Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The block of four STAFF DWELLINGS is part of a complex of eight dwellings from 1928 in Expressionist style, in a variant of the Amsterdam School. It is a design by architect Ingwersen. The other components of the complex are: II four staff dwellings (mirror image of component I); III shed of dwelling 156; IV shed of dwelling 170 (mirror image of III); V boundary fence at the street.
Collectively, the components form a symmetrical whole in relation to each other. The dwellings are situated on the ribbon-developed connecting road between Tilburg and Goirle. They have a communal front courtyard at the front and a private courtyard at the rear that is crossed by the communal unpaved "own" road. The rear section of the courtyard, which is farthest from the dwelling, was originally intended as a vegetable garden. Access to the rear courtyards is located next to dwelling 170 at the corner of the block. Moreover, 164 has a communal rear passage with 162, directly from the street. The dwellings were built for the Tilburg Metal Wire Lamp Factory N.V. on the Broekhovenseweg, later Volt B.V., mainly for the senior staff of the firm itself. There have always also been residents not connected to the business. In order to attract staff from outside the region for the business, an attractive building location was chosen. The dwellings were lavishly and modernly furnished for that time. The courtyard even provided space for its own vegetable garden. Major maintenance of the front and rear gardens was originally provided by the factory. The Housing Foundation Aert Swaens, dating from 1935, originally intended for Philips housing construction in and around Tilburg, managed the dwellings until 1964. After that they were transferred to the Stichting Hertog Hendrik van Lotharingen, a housing corporation in the municipality of Veldhoven, which also manages and operates much housing for Philips. Volt B.V. becomes a full Philips subsidiary in May 1979. A similar complex of dwellings is located on the Treurenburgstraat/Parklaan in Eindhoven, but without vegetable gardens.
Description.
The block of four staff dwellings has an elongated floor plan with an asymmetrical front facade composition. Each dwelling is different in size and appearance. On the right corner is the smallest and on the left corner the largest dwelling. They consist of two storeys. The largest dwelling, together with the entrance section/balcony of the adjacent dwelling, projects in the front facade. The block is covered by a hipped roof with the ridge perpendicular to the street and a vertical roof gable in the side facade down to the first storey. It has a round-arched front door, a two-part window on the ground floor and a three-part window on the upper floor. The latter window with small glazing bars has a built-out wooden flower box across its full width. Above the front door is an Expressionist false chimney in the roof. The other dwellings are covered by gabled roofs with the ridge parallel to the street. The smallest dwelling has a single-storey section with an overhanging half-hipped end and a vertical section that resembles a mansard. They have rectangular front doors. Two are located with a nine-pane vestibule window under a communal wooden canopy, which forms one whole with the wooden rain gutter of the left corner dwelling. The third is located in the side of the built-out entrance section, with a vestibule window at the front executed in leaded glass.
On the ground floor three-part windows and on the upper floor beneath the rain gutter of the gabled roof one continuous fourteen-part window, of which thirteen are tilting windows and one is a balcony door. The windows have horizontal glazing bars. The side facades of the corner dwellings are symmetrical in layout. In the left side facade in the middle is an expressive chimney with a sloping edge on the side of the roof gable. On the ground floor the chimney is flanked by a window and in the roof by a roof dormer. The right side facade has a two-part window on the ground floor. In addition to a rear door and kitchen window, the rear facades have opening garden doors and on the upper floor a continuous multi-part window as in the front facade. The smallest dwelling and the neighbouring dwelling have a communal balcony in the rear facade.
The masonry consists of red/purple bricks laid in chain bond. In front of the entrance of dwelling 166 is a small masonry buttress-like element with a cement sphere at its base. Beside the adjacent leaded glass window are cubic-form cement elements. The leaded glass contains an image of a laboratory-like flask. Red tiled work on the parapet between the front doors of numbers 168 and 170. The roofs are covered with red newly improved Dutch tiles. On the corner of the smallest dwelling stands a freestanding shed (separate monument number 516993), at the other dwellings this is situated on the rear courtyard.
Valuation
The complex is of general interest. It has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a cultural and socio-economic development, in particular the industrialisation of Tilburg. It is of importance as an example of the typological development of staff housing construction. It has architectural-historical importance on account of its place in the work of architect Ingwersen. The whole has been well preserved and as a coherent complex of staff dwellings is relatively rare.
