Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The CLOISTER CHAPEL with adjoining SACRISTY and former BURIAL CHAPEL of the Lazarist fathers originating from France form part of a large cloister complex otherwise outside national monument protection on the Kerkstraat in the centre of Panningen. The objects are located on the left side (south-west side) of the main cloister building, in a wing positioned perpendicular to the Kerkstraat.
The components to be protected were designed in Neo-Gothic style and form an extension of the cloister complex constructed in sections from 1879 onwards. Architect Henri Seelen from Venlo built the chapel in 1907, which was consecrated on 28 April 1908. In 1913 the work was completed with the addition of radial chapels. The brothers Gooden from Meijel carried out the work.
Besides the main cloister building, a connecting passage adjoining the left facade of the chapel (connecting the main building, cloister chapel, ambulatory with radial chapels, sacristy and side courtyard with each other) falls outside national monument protection.
The cloister was inhabited over time by various refugee orders and used for different purposes. The protected components were created under the Lazarist fathers who fled from France and have occupied the cloister since 1903. The Lazarists, an order founded in 1625 by Saint Vincent, established the building as a major seminary and mission cloister. Today the building serves as a cloister nursing home and mother house of the Dutch Lazarists with provincial office, bursar's office and mission procure. The chapel and sacristy are still in use. The adjoining burial chapel with underlying ossuary, now closed, remained in use as such until 1966 and now serves as a mourning chapel.
Description.
The cloister chapel oriented towards the north-west, like the adjoining sacristy and former burial chapel, covers an almost rectangular ground plan. The chapel has six bays with a 3/8 choir closure and consists of a single-aisle prayer room with mezzanine storey under a gabled roof covered with pantiles (originally slate), which curves around the apse. Ridge end crowned with a stylized wrought-iron cross. Several roof dormers on the courtyard side have now been replaced by roof windows. The tent roofs of four adjoining radial chapels covered with bitumen (originally slate) are crowned with finials, as is the hipped roof of the sacristy covered with pantiles.
The protected components are constructed from bricks laid in English bond with the application of red moulded stone around facade openings, for the plinth, gutter moulding and blocks and furthermore hard stone for drip stones, drip mouldings, lintels, tracery work, setting pieces, chamfered buttresses, steps and as facade coping.
The facades of the chapel are enlivened by a running pointed arch frieze and vertically articulated by buttresses tapering three times. Per bay two coupled lancet windows under a round window, all provided with stained glass. In the radial chapels small lancets provided with stained glass are located between strong diagonal lisenes. The facades of the sacristy are likewise enlivened by a running pointed arch frieze. The renewed windows are set off with wrought-iron ventilation grilles. The adjoining former burial chapel has small lancets with stained glass and a double wooden entrance door provided with panels, stained glass and decoratively wrought ventilation grilles. Above the door a pressed pointed arch-shaped window with stained glass and flamboyant tracery with fish-scales and quatrefoils.
In the interior of the chapel the whitewashed walls and vault caps are articulated by corbels, cross ribs, wall ribs and transverse arches in moulded brick. The elevation is two-tiered and consists of a solid wall surface in the lower zone and the stained glass windows framed with dentil mouldings in the upper zone, separated from each other by a running cornice line. The corbels on either side articulate the interior space vertically. They are provided with hard stone bases and polychrome half-capitals with acanthus leaf decoration that support cross rib vaults with hard stone keystones. In the chapel lies a terrazzo floor. In the central bay of the choir closure a passage consisting of two coupled pointed arches resting on a central column provides access to a partial ambulatory with four radial chapels in corresponding design. The floor is laid with monochrome cement tiles. The former burial chapel has a pointed arch-shaped wooden barrel vault and a floor with black and white tiles.
Besides the architectural design, various elements in the interior and inventory also point to the French origin (and objectives) of the Lazarists, including the iconography of the stained glass windows from the workshop of Nicolas in Roermond. Depicted are the apparition of Mary to St. Catherine Labouré in the Chapel of Apparitions in Paris, the founder Vincent presenting the rule to the Lazarists, his right hand Louise de Marillac and several Lazarists who died as martyrs during the mission in China. In the radial chapels likewise stained glass windows on which various saints are depicted. On the singing gallery stands a large neo-gothic organ, originating from the renowned Parisian workshop of A. Cavaillé-Coll and Ch. Mutin (1912) and as such rare in the Netherlands. Further components of importance include: various single and double oak-panelled doors with wrought-iron handles and ornamental fittings, at the central entrance door provided with a pointed arch fanlight with coloured stained glass and in the partial ambulatory with neo-gothic tracery and corresponding stained glass; a bay window consisting of a double door with pointed arch fanlight with oak tracery and coloured stained glass (burial chapel); a decorative wall painting with local religious figures (burial chapel); two full-height neo-gothic sacristy cupboards provided with panels, cornices and a relief (sacristy) and high wainscotings, various furnishings and Stations of the Cross in neo-gothic style (cloister chapel).
Assessment
The cloister chapel with sacristy and former burial chapel are of general importance. The objects possess cultural-historical values as a memorial to the refugee orders and as a particular expression of the contemplation and burial culture of the Lazarist fathers. French influences are evident both in architectural design and interior decoration and inventory. The objects possess architectural and art-historical values, particularly because of the consistent application of neo-gothic style elements—partly inspired by France—in both interior and exterior, because of the importance of the rare Parisian organ for the history of organ building and on account of the high aesthetic qualities and refined detailing of interior and inventory. The objects possess ensemble values as essential components of a historically developed cloister complex on the Kerkstraat in Panningen. The objects are important because of the integrity of exterior and interior and various well-preserved and partly rare elements of the inventory.
