Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Former TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE built in 1930 commissioned by the Ursuline sisters in Echt. The now detached building was constructed as an extension of the Ursuline convent, which was demolished in the nineties of the twentieth century and had formed a complex on a spacious plot between the Wijnstraat and Hofakker. The design by architects Caspar Franssen and Jos Franssen jr. from Roermond is influenced by Sachlichkeit Expressionism and is characterised by overhanging roofs, staggered building volumes in relation to one another and striking window detailing. The building is furnished with a monumental staircase with stained glass typical of the oeuvre of Jos Franssen. The left side elevation of the teacher training college, which was connected to the adjacent convent, was finished after demolition following the model of the existing facades. The attic of the teacher training college was converted into a residential apartment in the nineties of the twentieth century, and an opening to the cellar was created in the floor of the former assembly hall.
Description.
Now detached TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE on a composite ground plan consisting of an elongated main volume of basement, three storeys and a roof-story with on the right a one-and-a-half-storey flat-roofed, narrower extension. Parallel to the front facade a cellar entrance, separated by a brick FENCE that adjoins the projecting gable of the staircase. It adjoins entirely to the right against a modified access gate and consists of a cavity wall laid in brick in Flemish bond with decorative ironwork between 15 brick fence pillars. The wall between the pillars is furnished with some decorative brickwork and is topped with roll mouldings. The pillars have sandstone cappings. On the rear side the building steps back several times to the right and has two flat-roofed volumes projecting at the top. The building is bordered on the rear side by a single-storey flat-roofed veranda, serving as a covered walkway. The main volume is covered by a roof with ridge direction parallel to the street. This roof has a half-hipped end to the right and terminates to the left in a gabled roof, whereby the ridge steps back halfway across the roof because it is intersected on the rear side by the two aforementioned projecting volumes. The roof has generous wooden eaves with a gutter and is covered by re-improved Dutch tiles. In front, rear and right side hipped ends four recessed balconies were installed in the roof in 1998 for the apartment housed in the attic. The slightly projecting block-shaped staircase to the left is flat-roofed, the one-and-a-half-storey extension on the right side elevation has a half-hipped roof. An intermediate volume behind this extension has a flat roof with eaves. The veranda is covered with a flat roof with wooden eaves. The facades are constructed in reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond and have a clinker course closed with a roll moulding. Various types of windows are applied in the facades, mainly straight-topped with wooden frames with substantial sills. They are furnished with slightly projecting concrete lintels and sub-sills, in the first storey largely clad with smoothed sandstone plates. The asymmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE has to the left a strongly vertically articulated projecting section, in which the main entrance is located in the first storey. The door is surrounded by stepped and now whitewashed brickwork and flanked by two horizontal stained glass windows. The whole is framed between concrete bands and furnished with double wooden doors made of vertical wooden parts, furnished with ornamental fittings and two observation lights with grilles. A sandstone step lies in front of the door. This fairly squat storey is terminated with a projecting concrete cornice, above which is a large window arrangement consisting of five recessed vertical window strips between narrow brickwork mullions, which are interrupted halfway by a strip of brickwork. The window strips and spare fields have sandstone sub-sills with ears. The window strips are terminated at the top with a continuous lintel. On both sides of the risalit corner pilasters are laid in brickwork which at the crown project slightly beyond the roofline. The recessed facade section to the right is strongly horizontally articulated with regularly placed windows. In the clinker course a series of rectangular and undivided cellar lights. The first and second storeys can be divided according to the type of window into a four-window-bay left section with independent windows and a five, somewhat broader, window-bay right section with coupled windows. The first storey to the left has rectangular cross windows with uncoloured stained glass. The right facade section has in the first storey for the assembly hall large round-arched windows with three lower lights and three fanlights. These windows are coupled to one another by a mullion laid out on the soffit on a concrete block, below which is a narrow channel in the brickwork. The second storey has in the left facade section five small windows. To the right are five substantial classroom windows consisting of an undivided pane with three-light lower light and a three-light fanlight set between lintels. The windows are coupled to one another by a continuous sub-sill and by brickwork mullions between the fanlights. The third storey is more compact and furnished with relief by projecting roll mouldings. In this storey nine smaller coupled casement windows under two-part fanlights resting on a continuous sub-sill. In the front facade of the recessed extension to the right above two cellar lights is a storey terminated by a broad window strip consisting of two coupled three-light windows. Above this a loggia now blocked with windows but originally open with brick columns on a sandstone drip moulding. The columns are furnished with brickwork relief as aforementioned. The RIGHT SIDE ELEVATION of the extension is blank except for the loggia as described. The main volume has in the third storey four windows as in the front facade whereby the window entirely to the right is replaced by a door to a fire escape.
The asymmetrically arranged REAR FACADE consists of a broad facade section to the left and to the right an irregular section with some recessed volumes ending in the staircase. The first storey in the first-mentioned section has a series of coupled and independent windows alternated with double and single doors giving access to the veranda which extends across the entire facade width. This veranda steps back to the right in accordance with the facade. In the brickwork basement eight cellar lights and a cellar entrance. Three brick stairs give access to the garden. The veranda has a flat canopy on wooden struts which are furnished with stepped wooden consoles. The struts stand on reinforced sections in the brickwork, open-worked balustrade, which has contrasting capping plates. The canopy has wooden bargeboards. The floor of the veranda is laid with light brown-yellow tiles, with a border in red and black tiles as in the interior. To the left above the junction of the veranda in the broad section of the rear facade are coupled windows as in the front facade. The second storey has a broad strip of classroom windows as described. To the right of this three cross windows. The third storey has eight coupled casement windows, whereby the five windows to the right are surrounded with brickwork relief as described. To the right in the somewhat higher constructed facade section five small single-light windows (from the former bathrooms). To the right of this a narrow section which steps back and is furnished with two small single-light windows in each storey. In the recessed and much lower staircase section window strips as in the front facade. The LEFT SIDE ELEVATION was freed after demolition of the adjoining building and finished in 1999 in the manner of the existing facades.
The INTERIOR, which has been modified in places, has a monumental staircase which gives access to long tiled corridors in the lengthwise direction of the building, with small classrooms and rooms on both sides of which several are now modified and combined. The corridors open into large rooms which are situated one above the other on the ground floor, first and second floor in the west of the building and originally had the function of assembly hall, study room and dormitory respectively. In the interior the rich finishing from the second quarter of the twentieth century has been largely preserved. This includes among others the staircase with generously designed terrazzo staircase with ornamental wrought iron railing and multicoloured abstract stained glass windows, in the staircase and corridors tiled floors and wainscoting (red, black and light mixed tiles), most interior doors furnished with glazed panels and associated frames and hinges, stepped beam consoles in the large rooms and corridors characteristic of the architecture of Jos Franssen, and the joinery in the study room and in the assembly hall.
Assessment.
The former Roman Catholic TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE in Echt possesses architectural-historical value because it is a well-preserved and good example of a school building from the Interwar period with influences from Sachlichkeit Expressionism. The school building stands out due to aesthetic qualities in the design and material use which is expressed for example in the detailing of the windows. The building has a monumental staircase in Art Deco style, furnished with abstract stained glass. It is of importance as a characteristic example from the oeuvre of especially Jos Franssen. The school building is of townscape value as a characteristic component of the built environment in the centre of Echt at the corner of the Wijnstraat at the western entrance to the village. The building plays here due to its appearance and as a high facade wall along the narrow street an important image-determining role.
The building is of general importance, of cultural-historical value and typological value as a special expression of a religious and an educational development in the architecture of Catholic school buildings. The building is furthermore of importance due to the history connected to the teacher training college, as a reminder of the Ursuline convent formerly present here.
