Inleiding

Introduction

The detached CATTLE BARN is part of the complex at Molendijk 8 in the municipality of Korendijk. The rectangular barn is situated to the right of the dwelling house with the roof ridge perpendicular to the house. The building was built in the third quarter of the nineteenth century in a craft-traditional manner. Initially all walls were cob-tiled.

In the side aisles and at the rear the livestock was stalled, on the floor the hay was stored.

The complex component has scarcely been altered. In the first half of the twentieth century, however, three gables were rebuilt in brick.

Description

The barn is built from a rectangular floor plan and has a gabled roof with half-hipped ends and red Dutch tiles. The half-hipped end on the front is tiled with grey tiles. The rear of the barn is built of cob-tiled planks. The remaining gables of the barn have been bricked up and built in red brick over time.

In the front gable (west side) of the barn are two small, arched double doors and a large double door with upper and lower door. Above this is an iron, ellipse-arch fanlight with radial glazing bars. Next to the small doors are two stable windows with iron frames. In the apex is a semicircular window with radial glazing bars. The right side gable contains six two-part stable doors and seven small arched stable windows with iron frames. The left gable also has several such doors and windows. In the cob-tiled rear gable are two casement doors and likewise several stable windows.

Internally the barn is largely still in its original state. In the side aisles and at the rear of the barn are cattle stalls installed.

Valuation

The barn is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and ensemble value.

- The complex component is of cultural-historical value as a (component of) a particular expression of a development in agricultural architecture in the Hoekse Waard.

- The complex component is of architectural-historical value as a good example of a livestock barn in craft-traditional building style.

- The barn has ensemble value because of the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the other complex components and because of the fine location at the foot of the dike.

- The barn is also of importance because of its recognisability and the high degree of integrity.

- As a rule, the barn is not a component of an agricultural business detached from the dwelling house in this area and therefore also has rarity value.
