The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSE is part of the farmyard complex at Molendijk 8 in the municipality of Korendijk. The detached dwelling house stands with its gabled end turned somewhat askew towards the dike. The dwelling house, like the associated business sections, was built in the third quarter of the nineteenth century in a craft-traditional manner. In recent decades, several windows on the rear of the house have been enlarged.

Description

The dwelling house is built of facing brick from a rectangular floor plan. A gabled roof with half-hipped end is tiled with red Dutch tiles and covers the two storeys of the house. On the roof are a chimney and a roof dormer with casement windows with a bar above the right side gable. Against the rear stands an outbuilding with entrance under a lean-to roof with grey tiles. The gable top is newly built up on the rear in red brick, with a wide window and chimney. The gables, which stand above a hardstone plinth, are built of red brick in Flemish bond and are provided with stretchers above the windows and with quoins above the door and other windows and as edging of the front gable. Simple ornamental wall anchors enliven the front, rear and side gables. The front gable (south side) has a symmetrical, set-back cornice-topped facade with moulded cornice. Both storeys contain two windows with sash windows. In the stretchers above the windows under the cornice are two round openings. The main entrance is in the right side gable. To the left of this entrance is a window with six-pane sash window. In the left side gable is a cellar window.

The interior of the dwelling house is largely still in its original state. In the front room are still two box beds, a decorated coffered ceiling and a fireplace with panelling from the first quarter of this century.

Valuation

The dwelling house is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and ensemble value.

- The house is of cultural-historical value as a (component of) a particular expression of a development in agricultural architecture in the Hoekse Waard.

- The complex component has ensemble value because of the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the other complex components and because of the fine location of the complex component at the foot of the dike.

- The complex component is also of importance because of its recognisability and the high degree of integrity, particularly of the interior.

- A detached dwelling is an unusual component of a nineteenth-century farmyard in this area, which is why it also has rarity value.
