Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The ceramic factory De Porceleyne Fles relocated its activities in the second decade of the twentieth century to the Rotterdamseweg. This complex component, an INTERIOR COURTYARD, belongs to that first building period. In and around the courtyard are displayed architectural ceramic products. On the west side of the courtyard is the arched GALLERY (arcade), with which De Porceleyne Fles won the main prize at the World Exhibition in Paris of 1900. The distinctive bottle-green colour of the gallery was obtained by processing uranium oxide. The courtyard layout is characterised by a geometric design. The architectural ceramic elements in and around the courtyard were manufactured in various building styles, including historicising and expressionist forms. The office and factory building added in 1930 borders the courtyard on the east side, the factory building constructed at the same time as the courtyard in traditionalist style borders the courtyard on the north side. A glazed extension was realised here in the 1990s.
Description
The rectangular interior courtyard is provided with a rectangular pond with chamfered corners. On the short side of the pond is a narrow strip of garden, marked by curved ceramic tiles. These tiles are also laid around the pond. The pond and the strip are situated in a grassed area. Beside the pond is a ceramic fountain with figurative motifs. The arched gallery situated on the west side of the courtyard is constructed from a series of architectural ceramic arches in various historicising styles, including Neo-Romanesque, Neo-Gothic and Orientalism.
Valuation
The interior courtyard with arcade is of general importance due to its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and ensemble value.
The interior courtyard with arcade has cultural-historical value as an expression of a specific industrial sector, which was and is of great importance for the development of the ceramic industry characteristic of the Delft region. The interior courtyard with arcade has architectural-historical value due to the frequently applied architectural ceramics manufactured by the business itself, a building material that in the first decades of the twentieth century was of great influence on the development of architecture. Furthermore, the complex component has architectural-historical value as a good example of a particularly notable development in the application of building materials.
The complex component has ensemble value due to the spatial-functional relationship with the other complex components situated around the courtyard.
The complex component is furthermore of importance due to its legibility and great degree of integrity.
