Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

OFFICE BUILDING and FACTORY BUILDING of De Porceleyne Fles, built in 1930 according to a design by architect and T.H. lecturer A. van der Lee in a style in which influences of the Late Amsterdam School and the New Objectivity are incorporated. This building was a replacement of and addition to the already existing complex that was built in the second decade of the twentieth century. The building was renovated on the rear facade (north side). A canopy marks the renewed entrance to the business.

The interior of the building contains a particularly notable staircase, which is entirely decorated with ceramic tiles manufactured by the factory itself. On the ground floor, parts of the remaining interior were modified as a result of the reorganisation and expansion of the exhibition spaces.

Description

The office building is situated with its originally right side facade on a service road along the Rotterdamseweg. The original front facade, which is no longer used as such, is located on a narrow side road. The building consists of three rectangular volumes connected to one another with flat roofs, differing in length, width and height. The main volume has three storeys. The remaining volumes have two storeys and are situated on the north side of the main volume.

The facades are constructed in grey brick in alternating bond. Decorative brickwork is applied in the facades. The upper sides of the facades are covered with architectural ceramic tiles. The rectangular windows consist of single and composite window units with steel glazing bars and fanlights.

The symmetrical front facade (south side) has a rectangular facade surface with corner pilasters. The facade with nine bays is provided with a central projection the width of one bay. The central projection is also provided with two corner pilasters. The double doors of the entrance are framed by architectural ceramics. This ceramics features an expressionist design. The recessed facade surfaces each have four window bays. The windows in the first and second storeys are positioned in slightly recessed fields. Lisenes separate the fields from one another. The windows in the third storey are provided with stone-dressed keystones.

The asymmetrical rear side is composed of the rear facade of the main volume and the two rear facades of the volumes which project relative to this main volume. In the facade of the left projection is located the access to the exhibition spaces.

The asymmetrical left side facade is considerably more austere in its design. The three-storey high main volume is distinguished from the two-storey high volume by a broad corner pilaster. In the first storey of the main volume are two wide rectangular windows between which an entrance decorated with architectural ceramics is positioned. In the second and third storeys are windows which are separated from one another by brick piers.

The asymmetrical right side facade consists of three parts from left to right. Firstly the main volume articulated in the same manner, consisting of three storeys and eleven bays wide, provided with corner pilasters and the name 'DE PORCELEYNE FLES' on the wall surface below the series of windows of the third storey. Secondly a wing two storeys high and four bays wide, also provided with a corner pilaster. Thirdly the recessed access to the factory and the studios situated above it.

The central staircase with open well is entirely covered in bottle-green architectural ceramics and is thereby the most important representational element in the interior. In the exhibition spaces, which have been adapted many times and now extend to the factory halls, many outstanding examples of architectural ceramics from before 1940 have been preserved among others.

Valuation

The office and factory building is as a component of the De Porceleyne Fles complex of general importance due to its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and ensemble value.

The complex component has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a specific industrial sector, which was and is of great importance for the development of the ceramic industry characteristic of the Delft region. The complex component has architectural-historical value due to the frequently applied architectural ceramics manufactured by the business itself, a building material that in the first decades of the twentieth century was of great influence on the development of architecture. Furthermore, the complex component has architectural-historical value as a regional example of the development of a building style, as well as due to the important position of the complex component in the oeuvre of architect A. van der Lee. The complex component has ensemble value due to the spatial-functional relationship with the other components of the complex.

The complex component is furthermore of importance due to its reasonable degree of integrity.
