Inleiding
Voormalig KETELHUIS annex dienstgebouw, behorende bij het complex 'Rode Scheikunde' gebouwd voor de afdeling der Scheikundige Technologie van de Technische hogeschool, naar ontwerp van architect G. van Drecht uit 1918-1923. Het pand is gebouwd in een Traditionalistische stijl met invloeden uit de Amsterdamse School.
In 1953 werd het ketelhuis verbouwd tot transformatorhuis. Hiervoor werden de noord-westgevels en ook de interne indeling gewijzigd. De bijbehorende schoorsteen is afgebroken. Het dienstgedeelte huisvest momenteel het AVC, het Audio-Visueel centrum van de TU Delft.
Het ketelhuis/dienstgebouw ligt ten zuiden van het hoofdgebouw, ter hoogte van de achteringang, aan het Zuidplantsoen.
N.B. De uitbreidingen van rond 1990 (in rood) en het tochtportaal voor de nevenentree aan de oostzijde zijn vanuit het oogpunt van monumentenzorg van ondergeschikt belang.
Omschrijving
Gedeeltelijk onderkelderd, vrijstaand voormalig ketelhuis van één bouwlaag met plat dak, opgetrokken vanuit een samengestelde plattegrond. Grofweg bestaat de plattegrond uit een kruisvorm. Het gebouw heeft een betonnen constructie en de muren zijn opgetrokken in baksteen. De plint wordt afgesloten met een kunststenen waterlijst, die tevens als lekdorpels van de vensters dienst doet. De rechtgesloten vensters hebben forse kunststenen lateien en achtruits ramen. Rondom worden de gevels afgesloten met een kunststenen kroonlijst en overkragende betonnen daklijst.
De oostgevel bevat een centraal geplaatste hoofdentree, die bestaat uit een granieten stoep met bordes en borstweringen, een entreeportiek met trapsgewijs verspringende dagkanten en houten, dubbele entreedeuren. Het portiek wordt omlijst met geblokte lisenen van kunststeen op een podium van graniet. Dit podium loopt door in de dagkanten. De zware kunststenen latei van het portiek wordt in de kroonlijst erboven nogmaals benadrukt door een risalerend rechthoekig vlak. Aan weerszijden van de entree bevindt zich een venster met zestienruitsraam. Rechts daarvan twee vensters gescheiden door een smalle gemetselde muurdam met achtruitsramen. Links drie kleine hooggeplaatste rechtgesloten vensters met kunststenen lekdorpels. Vervolgens in de oostgevel van het risalerende, noordelijke deel een entree. De noordgevel bevat v.l.n.r. drie vensters en een brede koekoek met drie keldervensters, in het risalerende deel twee keer een reeks van drie vensters en een stalen deur en in het terugliggende deel van het transformatorgedeelte drie enkele stalen deuren onder een bescheiden latei. De westgevel bevat twee rechtgesloten entree's en twee rechtgesloten vensters met achtruits stolpramen.
Waardering
Voormalig ketelhuis behorende bij het complex 'Rode Scheikunde' van de TH naar ontwerp van architect Van Drecht uit 1918-1923 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde
- als uitdrukking van de functie namelijk ketelhuis/dienstgebouw en vanwege de plaats die het als onderdeel van het hoofdgebouw van de TH inneemt in de geschiedenis van de Technische Universiteit Delft;
- vanwege de karakteristieke hoofdvorm, toegepaste bouwstijl, het materiaalgebruik en de detaillering waarin sprake is van ensemblewerking met de overige complexonderdelen en vanwege de gaafheid.

Former BOILER HOUSE with service building, belonging to the 'Rode Scheikunde' complex built for the department of Chemical Technology of the Technical University, designed by architect G. van Drecht from 1918-1923. The building was constructed in a Traditionalist style with influences from the Amsterdam School.
In 1953 the boiler house was converted into a transformer house. For this purpose the north-west facades and also the internal layout were altered. The associated chimney was demolished. The service part currently houses the AVC, the Audio-Visual Centre of TU Delft.
The boiler house/service building is situated to the south of the main building, at the level of the rear entrance, on the Zuidplantsoen.
N.B. The extensions from around 1990 (in red) and the draught lobby for the secondary entrance on the east side are of subordinate importance from the perspective of monument conservation.
Description
Partially basement level, freestanding former boiler house of one storey with flat roof, erected from a compound floor plan. Roughly the floor plan consists of a cross-shape. The building has a concrete structure and the walls are constructed of brickwork. The plinth is finished with a stone drip moulding, which also serves as water drips for the windows. The flush windows have substantial stone lintels and glazed sashes with glazing bars. Around the facades are finished with a stone cornice and projecting concrete eaves line.
The east facade contains a centrally placed main entrance, consisting of a granite step with landing and parapets, an entrance portico with staggered reveals and wooden double entrance doors. The portico is framed with rusticated pilasters of stone on a granite podium. This podium continues in the reveals. The heavy stone lintel of the portico is further emphasised in the cornice above by a projecting rectangular panel. On either side of the entrance is a window with sixteen-pane sash. To the right of this two windows separated by a narrow brick wall with glazed-sash windows. To the left three small high-placed flush windows with stone drip mouldings. Subsequently in the east facade of the projecting northern part an entrance. The north facade contains from left to right three windows and a wide basement opening with three basement windows, in the projecting part twice a row of three windows and a steel door and in the recessed part of the transformer section three single steel doors under a modest lintel. The west facade contains two flush entrances and two flush windows with timber casement windows.
Valuation
Former boiler house belonging to the 'Rode Scheikunde' complex of the TU designed by architect Van Drecht from 1918-1923 is of general importance on account of its cultural and architectural-historical value
- as an expression of the function namely boiler house/service building and because of the place it occupies as part of the main building of the TU in the history of Delft University of Technology;
- on account of the characteristic main form, applied building style, the use of materials and the detailing in which there is ensemble work with the other complex components and on account of its integrity.
It has urban design value on account of its visually prominent location at the rear of the main building and the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the main building.
