Inleiding

Description
Introduction
UNIVERSITY BUILDING, principal component of the 'Rode Scheikunde' complex, built for the Department of Chemical Technology of the Technical High School, designed by architect G. van Drecht in 1918-1923. The building is constructed in a Traditionalist style with influences from the Amsterdam School.
During renovations after World War II under the direction of the State Building Service, the entire attic was converted into office space for the High School's Bureau (1953). The continuous strip of roof windows dates from this period. Previously, roof dormers were positioned at regular intervals within this vertical roof strip. In subsequent years too, the building underwent repeated alterations, including under the direction of the architectural firm K.J. Roosendaal in The Hague.
The mask-like decorations on the facades conceal the outlets of fume hoods. The tower contained a water reservoir, which could be deployed in case of fire resulting from chemical experiments. Through the positioning of wings, a spacious forecourt was created in front of the central wing. There stands the statue of Prometheus (1953), created by Professor L.O. Wenckebach.
Description
The main building is erected on a complex ground plan and consists essentially of a central wing containing the main entrance, with interconnected wings on either side. The wings on the west side form an E-shaped whole with a tall tower. The 'E' is connected to the central volume with its long side approximately at the centre. On the east side, the wings are arranged in an L-shape, with equal legs and additional transversely placed 'legs' approximately at the centre of the 'main legs'.
The corners of the wings project and/or establish themselves as subsidiary volumes. The wings consist of two storeys with a truncated gabled roof. The corner pavilions are executed with a pitched roof or hipped roof, the additional 'legs' with truncated roofs and tent roofs respectively. The roofs are covered with slate in Maas bond. Each bay is vertically accentuated by brick pilasters, which connect at the top to the artificial stone, profiled mouldings beneath a roof edge with dentil moulding. The pilasters occur in varying widths, because they span virtually the entire - varying - width between the windows. The capitals incorporated in the cornice are enriched with geometric relief. The text 'Technische Hogeschool' is carved into the cornice on the front facade. The corners are emphasised by the meeting of two pilasters. Each bay contains a single window, a coupled window or a triple window. The fully-closed, vertical windows are executed with mortared reveals and artificial stone drip moulds and lintels. On the ground floor, granite sill moulds are incorporated. With coupled windows, the mullions are of brick and/or artificial stone. The artificial stone mullions occur flat and with geometric relief. The steel frames are positioned in shallow reveals. The frames consist of fixed lights with multi-pane fanlights or double casement windows with the same fanlights. On each storey between the windows are positioned metal mask-like elements. Between the storeys are tightly arranged geometric mortared reliefs.
The front facade of the central wing spans eleven bays, of which the central projection with the main entrance occupies three bays. This projection has a tent roof with an open copper roof cupola on the ridge. The entrance is executed with a plinth, parapets along the forecourt and a forecourt of granite. The first storey consists of a tripartite portico with a stepped arcade, which is entirely executed in artificial stone from the plinth. The keystone of the middle arcade is adorned with a torch in bas-relief painted with gold paint. The verticality of the entrance section is emphasised by strong wall members between the arches, which project strongly forward on the front and are carried through as a monumental order up to the roof edge. Above the portico, closed with profile mouldings horizontally, between the vertical 'order' are positioned mortared reliefs. These reliefs are terminated by a horizontal drip moulding, which simultaneously functions as the drip mould of the three strong, fully-closed, nine-pane windows. The six-pane steel frames have artificial stone frames, which form a unity with the strongly horizontally profiled 'cornice' above. In the portico is positioned in the centre a double wooden door with sidelights. On either side is a two-part window. In the three-bay wide rear facade of the projection is the rear entrance with, in the central bay, a large stained-glass window with a balcony above it. On the upper storey are three window axes with multi-pane frames, which are executed with artificial stone frames and mullions. The artificial stone extends into the richly profiled cornice. Above this cornice are positioned in the roof three two-part windows, of which the projecting wall members are further emphasised by vertical artificial stone mouldings. The two windows on either side of the central bay are visually connected by a vertical artificial stone strip. Moreover, they form a unity with the 'cornice' in that the lintels form part of this moulding.
The verticality of the tower in handmade brick is strongly accentuated by mortared mullions. The windows in the form of sound holes are positioned in steps around. The parapet is adorned with sculptural work. The mortared octagonal tower spire is crowned by a copper helm.
The original layout of the building has been substantially preserved. Of significance are, among others, certain original staircases with a spacious stone staircase, which is made of granite and iron, the stained glass in concrete at the rear entrance by the artist Daan Wildschut, steel draught doors, tower staircase with concrete construction and steel steps, open concrete water reservoir with iron profiles.
