Inleiding

Introduction

Built in 1863 to a design by city architect C.J. de Bruyn Kops, a SERVICE DWELLING with the functions of a mortuary house and waiting room for the manager of the Municipal Cemetery Haagpoort, which was in use from 1829 to 1874, in what is now Kalverbos. After World War I, the house also served as a police post, before acquiring its present function as a double private dwelling. The building, constructed in a fairly austere Neo-Classical architectural style related to Eclecticism, stands with its rear facade facing the remnant of the former city canal (the Watertorengracht) and the northern edge of the protected townscape of Delft.

Description

Detached residential building composed of two volumes placed transversely to one another, erected from a T-shaped floor plan, with a low storey beneath hipped roofs with pantile covering that project outward. The projections of the roofs rest on braces along the side facades and on elongated blocks along the gable facades. The gutters are fitted with profiled boeiboards. The facades are rendered, they stand above a hardstone lower plinth and a grey-painted second plinth and are fitted with straight-closed openings. The appearance of the recessed facade of the front elevation facing Kalverbos is dominated by a veranda with an open canopy, consisting of a series of slanting laths resting on a beam. The canopy is supported by four rectangular timber columns standing on knees. The ground storey contains two windows with six-pane sash windows, whose tops are accentuated by a rectangular moulding. The door here to the left is a panel door with pseudo-stolp nail, standing beneath a fanlight and within moulded frames. The first-floor windows are square and contain panes with a diamond-shaped glazing bar pattern. The gable facade (a simple pointed gable) of the transverse volume here to the left has a symmetrical arrangement and has two windows in both storeys. The windows on the ground storey are as those in the aforementioned side facade. The first-floor windows contain four-pane sash windows. The peak of the gable top is accentuated by a slightly projecting edge. The left side facade of the transverse volume is likewise virtually symmetrical with a door in the middle and on either side on the ground storey a window as those at the front. Far left in the facade stands a small window. The first-floor windows contain panes as those above the veranda at the front.

The gable facade at the rear facing the water is identical to that at the front. The short side facade between this gable facade and the side facade contains a six-pane window without surround above the upper light.

The recessed side facade on this side contains on the ground storey a glazed door standing beneath a fanlight. The window to the left of it is as those of the other windows on the ground storey. Far right in this facade stands a narrow little window. The three windows on the first floor are identical to the three first-floor windows in the front facade.

The gable facade facing the street is also symmetrical. The windows on the ground storey here are likewise identical to those in the lower storey of the other facades. The blind gable top is fitted with a closed-off circle; during the time that the building housed a police post, there was a round clock face here.

The interior has been modified multiple times due to the changes in function. It contains no monumental components.
