The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Behind the rectory stands a CARRIAGE HOUSE in the garden, built around 1910. The style of the building is composed of different motifs: the roof with wooden cladding featuring three-span motifs has elements of the Chalet style, the steep roof pitch and a substantial overhang suggest Neo-Gothic.

Description

The single-storey brick building has a rectangular plan and is covered by an asymmetrical (being set lower at the rear) composite gabled roof with tuile-de-nord tiles. The roof has a steep pitch and a substantial overhang on cut wooden corbels. The brick masonry has a bossed sandstone plinth and bands in a contrasting colour of brick. The high gable walls are cladded with timber. The building comprises three parts: on the ground floor the actual carriage stalling and a horse stable, while on the upper floor a hay storage room is housed. This hay loft is accessible via a trap door with a hoisting installation beneath the overhanging gable, above the entrance portal of the stalling. Simple windows with composite mouldings are arranged in the facades. The room adjacent to the stalling has an entrance door with composite kerf-arch fanlight, flanked by windows, and in the side facade a composite window, composed of a central six-pane sash window, flanked by a T-sash window.

Valuation

The carriage house is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a distinctive expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also significant for the typological development of the carriage house. It is of architectural-historical importance because of its distinctive style and as an exceptional example of the late work of C. Franssen. It has ensemble value as a visual focal point of the partly industrial building cluster around the Zuid Willemsvaart. It is significant because of the architectural integrity of its exterior.
