Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The R.C. CHURCH of the H.Leonardus de Noblac is an originally three-aisled Neo-Gothic cruciform basilica, built in 1898 after a design by C. Franssen, Roermond. The non-oriented building was extended in 1929 with two side aisles by C. Roffelsen, Helmond. Since then the church has had a nave of five aisles.
Description.
The H.Leonardus church has a tower with entrance portal situated on the northern side of the church, a nave of four bays, a single-aisled transept and a choir, consisting of two bays and a three-sided closed apse. The church has gabled roofs with slate in Maas covering. The facades are built in brick and sparsely decorated with sandstone coping mouldings, offsets, lintels and plinth. The masonry is adorned with a herringbone arch frieze and dentil mouldings and is buttressed by heavy buttresses, crowned on the northern side by pinnacle turrets. The entrance facade with the tower, flanked by pentagonal chapels projecting from the building line, are decorated in the manner characteristic of Franssen with natural stone sculpture: crockets, wimbergs and hogels. In the tower is a projecting pointed arch portal with, crowning the wimberg, a limestone high relief depicting the H. Michaël. The clasped doors have heavy wrought iron fittings. Throughout the church are simple lancet windows with brick tracery.
The tower consists of three storeys and is crowned by a hexagonal spire with slate covering and flanking spirelets. In 1929 Roffelsen extended the church in adapted style by adding two neo-gothic side aisles of five bays. In the interior are among others of importance the two oak neo-gothic communion rails from around 1900, ten neo-gothic statues from around 1900, two polychrome wooden statues of H.Leonardus and H.Joseph (J.Custers, 1899), the stained glass windows in the priest's choir, sacrament chapel and baptismal chapel (by Derix, Kevelaer-Goch, 1904-'08), in transept, south and north chapel (by Menke, Goch, 1922-'23 and 1944), and the stations of the cross (C.J. van Geffen, 1906 ("after Anthony") and C. Boelen, Helmond, 1921).
Valuation.
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance for the typological development of the church in the Interbellum. It is of architectural historical importance as an example of the late work of C. Franssen and is also of importance as an example of the enlargement of church buildings in a style consistent with the original situation. It has ensemble values as a visual focal point of the partly industrial building complex around the Zuid Willemsvaart. It is of importance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior and interior.
