The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

On the western side of the cloister is a GARDEN enclosed by a high brick WALL under a saddle-back ridge, with a SACRED HEART STATUE from around 1925, a LOURDES GROTTO from around 1930 and a CALVARY MOUNT from the same year. In the south-western corner a BURIAL VAULT from 1894.

Description

The brick wall encloses the garden on the northern, western and southern sides. The wall is approximately three metres high, has a saddle-back ridge and on the northern side near the former novitiate a small round-arched gateway. In various places the wall is overgrown with stone-breaker ferns and wall-ferns. Important is the row of pollarded limes and plane trees from 1893 running along the wall dating from the nineteenth century. In the wall, after the Second World War, new Stations of the Cross were mortared in. In the courtyard enclosed by three wings stands an unsigned sandstone Sacred Heart statue on a cemented base, with the text: "Most Holy / Sacred Heart of Jesus / I trust in You". The simple Lourdes Grotto is built of rubble and has wrought-iron grillwork and a polychromedlater, probably cement, statue of Mary. In front of the grotto the cement, likewise polychromed statue of a kneeling Bernadette. The Calvary mount consists of a cast stone group with crucifix, Mary and John. It has a renewed copper corpus. The simple brick burial vault has a rectangular floor plan and consists of a single flight of steps lying below ground level in a central hall (under a shallow gabled roof, accessible on the northern side via a (anno 1992 rotten and removed) wing door with fanlight, consisting of four pointed-arch lights. The hardstone staircase leads to the interior, which has a beam ceiling. The wall left and right in the hall is furnished with grave stones. On the western and eastern side the burial vault has a lower annex under a flat roof. The northern facade is a simple pilaster facade with dentil moulding and segmental-arch blind windows.

Valuation

The cloister garden with religious elements is of general importance. The whole has cultural-historical value as an example of spiritual development, namely the flourishing of religious orders and congregations in the nineteenth century, and is moreover of importance as an example of the development of the contemplative, self-sufficient cloister in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It has ensemble values on account of the binding effect which the garden has in relation to the entire complex of cloister, farm and garden. It is moreover of importance in conjunction with the development of the church village.
