Inleiding

Introduction

Against the northern facade of the oldest part of the cloister of the Redemptionist Sisters at Sambeek, a single-aisle CHAPEL in sober neo-gothic style (architect J. Kayser from Venlo) was built in 1882. The chapel is set slightly back from the building line in comparison with the other buildings and is partly separated from the street by the planting of a small garden. In 1968 the nuns' choir was broken out and the sacristy was altered. In 1990 the crowning roof lantern was blown away.

Description

The single-aisle convent chapel has a rectangular floor plan, a gabled roof with slate in Maas coverage. On the roof stand four neo-gothic roof dormers. Distinctive are the crownings of the gable ends with substantial stepped roofs under saddle-back ridges. The northern gable end has three pointed-arch recesses. The southern one is built against the northern wall of building (1). The chapel comprises four bays. The facades are built of brick and on the eastern side provided with two recessed buttresses, a plinth and window surround with moulded stone, and a mortared frieze with dentil moulding. In the eastern facade are three large pointed-arch windows with limestone tracery, consisting of three lancets. In the most southern bay is a hinged wing door with wrought-iron decorative ironwork, above which on the upper storey a coupled lancet window. In the northern gable end is a single pointed-arch window, whose tracery consists of five lancets. Against this northern facade stands a single-storey boiler room under a flat roof (circa 1930).

Internally, the chapel has mortared four-part cross-rib vaults, wall piers consisting of pilaster strips with moulded stones and plaster Stations of the Cross from around 1900. Of importance is also the northern stained-glass window (around 1882, workshop Ohr from Roermond) depicting the Sacred Heart, flanked by Theresa, Mary, Joseph and Francis. Of importance is also the organ with a manual and attached pedal by Johann Winkels from 1889, making use of older components and neo-gothic carved ornaments by Marianus Trix from Boxmeer.

On the side above the keyboard a painted scroll with the text: "Laudate cum in tympano et choro: laudate cum in choris et organo".

Valuation

The chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of spiritual development, namely the flourishing of religious orders and congregations in the nineteenth century, and is moreover of importance as an example of the typological development of the contemplative, self-sufficient cloister in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

It is of architectural-historical importance on account of the style and the place in the work of architect Kayser. It has ensemble values on account of the coherence of cloister, farm and garden. It is moreover of importance in conjunction with the development of the church village.
