The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Against the western, blind facade of the convent chapel, at the same time as the construction of the south wing and the chapel, a northern block-shaped CLOISTER WING was erected. The building dates from 1882 and is likewise from the hand of J. Kayser from Venlo. In the building were housed on the ground floor the novitiate and a guest room and on the upper floor the sickroom and a side choir. At present part of the wing is used by the Catechetical Centre Boxmeer.

Description

The two-storey wing has a rectangular floor plan and a gabled roof. The sober brickwork is crowned by a frieze mortared with moulded stones. On the first floor are composite wooden cross windows, alternated with narrow lights, provided with wrought-iron grillwork.

In the interior are of importance among others the simple wooden floors with broad sections, the panelled doors and the attic floor, with an exposed roof truss structure with wooden rafters, with a double central post extending to the ridge. The side choir adjoining the chapel on the ground floor has a neo-gothic wooden door, originating from the confessional, and a ceiling with heavy tie-beams and collar-ties.

Valuation

The cloister wing is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of spiritual development, namely the flourishing of religious orders and congregations in the nineteenth century, and is moreover of importance as an example of the typological development of the contemplative, self-sufficient cloister in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It is of architectural-historical importance on account of the style and the place in the work of architect Kayser. It has ensemble values on account of the coherence of cloister, farm and garden. It is moreover of importance in conjunction with the development of the church village.
