Inleiding
Voormalig KRUITMAGAZIJN gebouwd in 1837-1838 in een voor utilitaire gebouwen kenmerkende Traditioneel Ambachtelijk stijl. Onder leiding van de 2e luitenant-ingenieur G. van den Hoeven kwam het pand gereed. Het bomvrije gebouw ligt op Bastion XI aan noord-oostelijke zijde van het centrum van Gorinchem.
Omschrijving
Rechthoekig, eenlaags pand opgetrokken in rode baksteen onder een met daktegels gedekt zadeldak. De gemetselde fundamenten rusten op een roosterwerk van houten palen.
Het pand heeft een tonvormige kern die in het metselwerk van de beide kopse gevels zichtbaar is. Deze puntgevels (noord-oost en zuid-west) hebben vlechtingen en een grote, rondboogvormige deur die geflankeerd wordt door twee grote en kleine rondboogvormige, met luiken behangen muuropeningen. De zijgevels zijn 2,5 meter dik en zijn voorzien van steunberen die met natuursteen zijn afgedekt.
INTERIEUR. Aan de voorzijde (sraatzijde) van het pand kan het voormalige munitiemagazijn (21 x 7,94 meter) betreden worden via een protaal met zware eikenhouten deuren. Van de oorspronkelijke dubbele deuren is slechts een paar aanwezig. Het gemetselde tongewelf van de opslagruimte is zichtbaar. Gemetselde toogjes net boven het vloeroppervlak verraden de ontluchtingskokers. Aan de achterzijde van de ruimte eveneens een portaal waarin een paar van de, oorspronkelijke dubbele, eikenhouten deuren geplaatst zijn.

Voormalig kruitmagazijn is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde
- als typologisch voorbeeld van een kruitmagazijn uit het midden van de 19de eeuw. Het pand is gaaf in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering wat betreft het ex- en interieur.

Former POWDER MAGAZINE built in 1837-1838 in a Traditional Craft style characteristic of utilitarian buildings. Under the direction of 2nd Lieutenant-Engineer G. van den Hoeven the building was completed. The bomb-proof building is located on Bastion XI on the north-eastern side of the centre of Gorinchem.
Description
Rectangular, single-storey building constructed in red brick under a gabled roof covered with roof tiles. The masoned foundations rest on a latticework of wooden piles.
The building has a barrel-vaulted core which is visible in the masonry of both gable ends. These pointed gables (north-east and south-west) have braiding and a large round-arched door which is flanked by two large and small round-arched, shuttered wall openings. The side facades are 2.5 metres thick and are provided with buttresses capped with natural stone.
INTERIOR. On the front (street side) of the building the former ammunition magazine (21 x 7.94 metres) can be entered via a portal with heavy oak doors. Of the original double doors only one pair is present. The masoned barrel vault of the storage room is visible. Masoned small arches just above floor level reveal the ventilation ducts. On the rear side of the room likewise a portal in which a pair of the, original, double oak doors are placed.
Valuation
Former powder magazine is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value
