The register's description

Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

The symmetrically arranged entrance complex at the Algemene begraafplaats was designed in 1908 as a single entity in Dutch Neo-Renaissance style after a design by municipal architect S. Uden Masman. Of this complex, the northeastern outbuilding is the CEMETERY CHAPEL, which is almost mirror-symmetrical to the opposite service dwelling.

N.B. The extension against the northeastern side facade is excluded from protection.

Description

Detached single-storey building mass on a rectangular floor plan under a hipped roof with red Tuile-du-Nord tiles and ridge cresting. The facades are constructed of grey brick in English bond, with the slightly projecting plinth covered by a fillet course of orange glazed moulded brick. Red brick is decoratively applied at the location of the pilasters and the frieze below the gutter. Hardstone is used for the drip mouldings and the lintels executed as main beams, which rest on small ornamental blocks in the form of consoles. Hardstone corner and ornamental blocks are also used at the plinth, at the location of the pilasters and above the lintels. The main-beam-style, corniced gutter lines and the roof dormer are of wood, as are the four pinnacles on the gable corners. The windows are fitted with T-sash windows.

The front and rear facades of the symmetrically arranged main structure have corner pilasters. At the front facade (southeast) there is one window on each side of the central axis. In line with the central axis there is a richly ornamented roof dormer in Neo-Renaissance ornamental work, provided with a window with a semicircular fanlight. The cheeks and the semicircular pediment with shell decoration are executed with pinnacles. The left side facade (southwest) has on the left of the facade a double door with glazed panes, provided with a two-pane fanlight. To the left of this the entrance gate adjoins the chapel facade. Against the right side facade (northeast) a low single-storey extension under a lean-to roof is positioned in keeping with the style, which falls outside the scope of national monument protection. In the rear facade (northwest) one window has been closed in.

Valuation

The cemetery chapel is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value

- as a characteristic component of an entrance complex at a cemetery in Dutch Neo-Renaissance style from the early 20th century.

- because of its high ensemble value and as a functional and spatial component of the cemetery.

The cemetery chapel is relatively well-preserved with regard to main form, material use and detailing.
