Introduction

The symmetrically arranged entrance complex at the Algemene begraafplaats was designed in 1908 as a single entity in Dutch Neo-Renaissance style after a design by municipal architect S. Uden Masman. Of this complex, the southwestern outbuilding is the SERVICE DWELLING, which is almost mirror-symmetrical to the opposite cemetery chapel.

Description

Detached single-storey building mass on a rectangular floor plan under a hipped roof with red Tuile-du-Nord tiles and ridge cresting. The facades are constructed of grey brick in English bond, with the slightly projecting plinth covered by a fillet course of orange glazed moulded brick. Red brick is decoratively applied at the location of the pilasters, the frieze below the gutter and the chimney. Hardstone is used for the drip mouldings and the lintels executed as main beams, which rest on small ornamental blocks in the form of consoles. Hardstone corner blocks are also used at the plinth, at the location of the pilasters. The main-beam-style corniced gutter lines and the roof dormer are of wood, as are the four pinnacles on the gable corners. The windows are fitted with T-sash windows.

The front and rear facades of the symmetrically arranged main structure have corner pilasters. The front facade (southeast) has one window on each side of the central axis. In line with the central axis there is a richly ornamented roof dormer with Neo-Renaissance ornamental work, provided with a window with a semicircular fanlight. The cheeks with cartouches and heraldic motif and the semicircular pediment with shell decoration are crowned with pinnacles. The left side facade (southwest) and the rear facade (northwest) each have one window in the centre of the facade. The symmetrically subdivided, three-window-unit-wide, right side facade (northeast) has two windows on the left and one (renewed) glazed panel door on the right with trellised pane and fanlight. The entrance gate adjoins at the pier between the two windows.
