Inleiding

Introduction

LODGE BUILDING in Amsterdam School style from 1924 with adjoining CARETAKER'S DWELLING from 1936, built on behalf of the freemasons' lodge "De Noordstar" to a design by architects L. Groen and D. Saal. During the Second World War the temple hall was fitted out as a printing works and after 1945 the hall regained its original use. For this purpose an alteration took place in 1947 to a design by L. Groen. The buildings are part of the enclosed south-western facade along the Gedempte Nieuwesloot.

Description

The lodge building consists of two rectangular building volumes of one storey with attic storey under mansard roofs with smothered Tuile du Nord tiles with ridge lines parallel to the street. The rear building block, which is not visible from the street, contains the temple hall. The broad front elevation (NE) facing the street has on the left one storey, while the right section is heightened to two storeys. Above the low section the protruding roof panel is bent; the higher part projecting into the roof panel is finished with a flat front. The front elevation is rendered and painted, the high plinth under the drip moulding of the windows in a dark grey colour, the upper section light-coloured. On the right is the slightly recessed entrance with door between two narrow ladder windows. Above the entrance the sign of the freemasons: a compass and a set square. To the right of the door a decorative metal flagpole bracket is mounted. On the left in the elevation on the ground floor four wide windows with in the fanlights a fourteen-pane glazing bar division, which belong to the space serving as a vestibule. In the higher section on the upper storey on the left the same window as on the ground floor is found and to its right four small windows with a corner pane division. The elevation is finished with a narrow roof cornice. Internally the temple hall with pointed arch vault and the fixtures and detailing from 1947 are largely well preserved. The caretaker's dwelling has two storeys under a gabled roof covered with smothered Tuile du Nord tiles with ridge line perpendicular to the street. In the front elevation (NE) on the ground floor three rectangular windows and on the upper storey a curved bay of four windows with leaded glass panes in the fanlights.

Valuation

The freemasons' lodge from 1924/1947 with adjoining caretaker's dwelling is of general importance because of its architectural, cultural-historical and typological value as an example of a lodge building in Amsterdam School style with well-preserved temple hall in a particular design inspired by the work of S. van Ravesteijn from 1947. The buildings are prominently situated in the centre of Alkmaar.
