Inleiding
(Voormalig) POLITIEBUREAU uit 1935-1936, gebouwd in de voor het oeuvre van A.J. Kropholler (1882-1973) kenmerkende robuuste traditionalistische bouwstijl. Het oorspronkelijke ontwerp van Kropholler uit 1931 omvatte het politiebureau en het kantoorgebouw "Hooge Huys" die via een poortgebouw met elkaar waren verbonden. Het voormalige politiebureau ligt op de hoek van het Kerkplein en de St. Laurensstraat tegenover het kantoorpand "Hooge Huys".
Omschrijving
Het pand heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder een zadeldak met rode Hollandse pannen. De gevels zijn boven een natuurstenen plint opgetrokken in een grote rode handvormsteen, type kloostermop. Deze is gemetseld in halfsteens verband. De bakgoten op consoles zijn uitgevoerd in natuursteen, evenals de zware lateien en waterdorpels van de smalle vensters. De trapgevel aan het Kerkplein (ZW) is symmetrisch van opzet met een centrale entreepartij onder een zware rondboog op natuurstenen aanzetstenen. Boven de iets terugliggende dubbele geverniste deur met smeedijzeren hang- en sluitwerk een natuurstenen latei met in vergulde letters het opschrift POLITIE. Aan weerszijden van de ingangsportiek kleine vierruitsvensters. Op de verdieping boven de entree een natuurstenen reliëf met het wapen van Alkmaar gedragen door twee leeuwen en daaronder de Latijnse tekst "ALCMARIA VICTRIX". Links en rechts daarvan twee paar gekoppelde zesruits vensters.
De trapgevel bestaat uit zes trappen met natuurstenen dekplaten en bovenin een toppilaster op een eenvoudige natuurstenen console. Boven het reliëf een rond vierruits venster tussen twee grote rood geschilderde smeedijzeren muurankers. Een zelfde muuranker bevindt zich op de toppilaster.
In de zijgevel (ZO) aan de St. Laurensstraat op de begane grond links drie kruisvensters met natuurstenen water- en middendorpels. Rechts daarvan een lage rondboogdeur tussen twee kleinere vensters en daarnaast een grote rondboogvormige gevelopening, waarin oorspronkelijk een dubbele inrijdeur was aangebracht. De verdiepingslaag telt twaalf gekoppelde zesruits vensters en uiterst links een driedubbel zesruits venster. De noordoostelijke trapgevel bevat enkele kleine vierruits vensters en bovenin een roosvenster.
INTERIEUR. Van het interieur uit de bouwtijd is de plattegrondindeling op hoofdlijnen bewaard gebleven. Op de begane grond onder meer een grote hal met vloer van grote vierkante flagstones, in zandkleurige baksteen opgetrokken wanden met lambrizering van witte geglazuurde baksteen en een tongewelf. Oorspronkelijk trappenhuis met tegeltableaus, onder andere met het wapen van Alkmaar, en een traplicht bestaande uit drie smalle hoge getoogde glas-in-loodramen met zon, maan en ster.
Waardering
Het voormalige politiebureau uit 1936 is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde als representatief voorbeeld uit het oeuvre van A.J. Kropholler in zijn herkenbare traditionalistische robuuste bouwstijl. Het pand is beeldbepalend gesitueerd aan het Kerkplein in de nabijheid van het "Hooge Huys", eveneens ontworpen door Kropholler.

(Former) POLICE STATION from 1935-1936, built in the robust traditionalist architectural style characteristic of A.J. Kropholler's oeuvre (1882-1973). Kropholler's original design from 1931 comprised the police station and the office building "Hooge Huys" which were connected via a gateway building. The former police station is located at the corner of the Kerkplein and the St. Laurensstraat opposite the office building "Hooge Huys".
Description
The building has a rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys beneath a gabled roof with red Dutch tiles. The gables above a natural stone plinth are constructed in large red hand-moulded brick, type cloister brick. This is laid in half-brick bond. The gutters on brackets are executed in natural stone, as are the heavy lintels and drip moulds of the narrow windows. The stepped gable at the Kerkplein (SW) is symmetrical in layout with a central entrance section beneath a heavy round arch on natural stone springer stones. Above the slightly recessed double varnished door with wrought-iron fixtures is a natural stone lintel inscribed in gilded letters "POLITIE". On either side of the entrance portico are small four-pane windows. On the upper storey above the entrance is a natural stone relief bearing the coat of arms of Alkmaar supported by two lions and below it the Latin text "ALCMARIA VICTRIX". To the left and right of this are two pairs of coupled six-pane windows.
The stepped gable consists of six steps with natural stone coping and at the top a corner pilaster on a simple natural stone bracket. Above the relief is a round four-pane window between two large red painted wrought-iron wall anchors. A similar wall anchor is located on the corner pilaster.
In the side gable (SE) on the St. Laurensstraat on the ground floor on the left are three cross windows with natural stone drip moulds and central mullions. To the right of this is a low round arched door between two smaller windows and next to it a large round arched wall opening in which a double carriage door was originally installed. The upper storey contains twelve coupled six-pane windows and at the far left a triple six-pane window. The north-eastern stepped gable contains several small four-pane windows and at the top a rose window.
INTERIOR. The floor plan arrangement from the time of construction has been largely preserved. On the ground floor is among other things a large hall with flooring of large square flagstones, walls constructed in sand-coloured brick with wainscoting of white glazed brick and a barrel vault. Original staircase with tile tableaux, including among others the coat of arms of Alkmaar, and a stairlight consisting of three narrow tall arched stained-glass windows featuring sun, moon and star.
Valuation
The former police station from 1936 is of general importance for its architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative example from A.J. Kropholler's oeuvre in his recognizable traditionalist robust architectural style.
