Inleiding

Introduction

OFFICE BUILDING "Hooge Huys" with adjoining CARETAKER'S DWELLING from 1931 and OFFICE BUILDING "Princenhof" from 1933, built according to designs by A.J. Kropholler in his characteristic traditionalist robust building style. Kropholler's original design from 1931 also encompassed the police station built only in 1936, which was to be connected to the "Hooge Huys" via a gatehouse. The "Princenhof" was raised by one storey in 1961, simultaneously with the construction of the office building "Hof van Teylingen" at the corner with the Gedempte Nieuwesloot. The "Hof van Teylingen" is stylistically consistent with the other office buildings and was designed by N. Bijl.

The composite building occupies the entire south-eastern facade wall of the St. Laurensstraat in the centre of Alkmaar, opposite the former police station at the Kerkplein.

Description

The office building consists of two building volumes, constructed in large red hand-moulded brick (cloister brick type) with components executed in natural stone such as plinths, drip mouldings, lintels, decorative blocks and setting stones at windows and arches. The "Hooge Huys" has two storeys above a basement and the "Princenhof" three, both beneath steep gabled roofs with projecting eaves and lead covering. The end gables of the "Hooge Huys" are executed with stepped gables and those of the "Princenhof" with spout gables. The rectangular windows are largely executed with hinged four- or six-pane casements beneath two- or four-pane fanlights.

The appearance of the "Hooge Huys" is largely determined by the monumental stepped gable (SW) on the Langestraat. The entrance is located in a corner portico with brickwork round arches opening both to the Langestraat and to the St. Laurensstraat. The round arches meet at the corner in a sturdy brickwork column with composite natural stone console. The setting stones of the arches likewise consist of large blocks of moulded natural stone. In the entrance portico is a broad staircase leading to a vaulted double copper door on the first floor. To the right of the round arch in the facade on the Langestraat a small window and two larger windows with stained-glass panes in the fanlights. At the far right a facade opening where originally a door was located and above it a small round-arch window. On the second floor three pairs of coupled windows with between the left two a natural stone medallion with relief, depicting a pelican feeding three young with blood from its breast. The broad left part of the main facade on the Langestraat ends in a high monumental stepped gable of six steps, topped by brickwork saddle-back coping. In the gable apex a top pilaster on simple rounded natural stone console with a sturdy wrought-iron gable anchor. At the top of the stepped gable a small attic window. The narrower right part of the facade is terminated by a natural stone drip moulding on rounded consoles. The roof above this section stands perpendicular to the main roof of the building. In the natural stone plinth of the side facade (NW) a series of small basement windows with burglar bars. Approximately in the middle of the facade on the first floor a coupled window with two-pane fanlight. In the windows are coloured stained-glass panes with figurative representations. To the left of this a broad composite frame of five six-pane windows with hinged casements beneath four-pane fanlights. To the right of the centre two smaller four-pane windows with stained glass in the two-pane fanlights and at the corner the round arch of the portico. Beside the round arch is a small terracotta facade stone with two fish (a reference to Jacob Cabeliau, commander during the siege of Alkmaar in 1573, who died at 't Hooge huys in 1574). On the second floor in the centre four small little windows beneath continuous stretcher course, flanked on each side by two pairs of coupled windows. The facade is terminated by a natural stone drip moulding on consoles. In the central axis of the facade, just above the gutter line a small dormer with a pointed gable beneath a small gabled roof. The north-eastern stepped gable of the "Hooge Huys" ends in a high chimney with cap. On the first floor to the right three coupled large windows and to the left of these a single window. On the second floor to the right a coupled window and to the left a single window and above it in the stepped gable a small attic window. To the left of the side facade is the recessed extension with the caretaker's dwelling on the second floor. The extension has two storeys beneath a gabled roof with slates that is terminated on the north-eastern side with a stepped gable. The forecourt is separated from the Laurensstraat by a brick wall with wooden access gate between two pillars with seated heraldic lions. In the facade on the ground floor to the right the door to the upper dwelling with a small side light and to the left a double varnished round-arch door and a smaller single door beneath round arch. On the first floor two windows with four-pane hinged casements beneath two-pane fanlights and to the right of these a four-pane window. On the second floor two six-pane windows with hinged casements and to the right a small two-pane window. The facade of the "Princenhof" (NE) along the St. Laurensstraat is simpler in detail than that of the "Hooge Huys". On the ground floor to the right a broad double round-arch door. To the left of this are three and to the right of this one coupled window. On the first and second floors lower windows, largely coupled.

INTERIOR. In the "Hooge huys" a large part of the original interior including the furnishings from the time of construction according to Kropholler's design has been preserved. The large central hall on the first floor has a floor of polished square Comblanchien marble tiles, the walls are constructed in fair-faced brickwork of yellow brick and provided with tile panels with the coats of arms of Alkmaar and North Holland. The conference, consultation, and director's rooms are provided with wainscoting, built-in cupboards, and tile panels with zodiac signs. In almost the entire building the original doors have been preserved.

Valuation

The office buildings "Hooge Huys" and "Princenhof" from 1931-1933 with adjoining caretaker's dwelling are of general importance due to their architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative and both externally and internally largely intact example from the oeuvre of A.J. Kropholler in his characteristic traditionalist robust building style. The building is of urban planning importance due to its image-determining location in the centre of Alkmaar opposite the former police station likewise designed by Kropholler.
